I get in to power plants, nuke and coal, military installations, air bases and airports without it.
Only place I've used it was at a refinery in Mandan and one in St Paul.
Both considered ports since they are on rivers.

It can get you into Camp Pendleton.
tommymonza, Lepton1, 9417 and 1 other person Thank this. -
I went to places located at the ports and almost always was asked for it. Most tanker yankers have too. And my companies always reimbursed me for the cost of the card.

Only 2 places ever ask for it, 1 Terminal Island and Rough n Ready Island Stockton... I go to Groom Lake they laugh at it, had to get there ID cards, same at Creech and Walker. Each had its own back ground checks , and each laughed at the TWIC card. Also works at LAX to access certain parts of the complex, but wont get you past the ticket counter.
mhyn Thanks this. -
Keep mine in my wallet, I use mine as a form of ID at certain shippers. Any shipper that demands I write my DL number or such on paperwork, I pull out my TWIC card and use that number. Only once has someone had an issue with it, I point out it's a valid federal ID card, that shuts them up.

there's a reason they give you a holder.
reading comments people are asking if they've ever used a TWIC card I believe this original poster is simply asking do you have to use the little lanyard holder which makes plenty of sense or can you just stick it when the cubby hole put it in your wallet put it in your pocket??
the whole question is about I have a TWIC card do I have to use the little holder..hmm??
the way it's designed it can sit in the holder and you can show it and they can clearly see it and it doesn't get damaged.
I'm in and out of TSA ports all the time in New Orleans Lake Charles Louisiana Savannah Georgia by Chicago catoosa Oklahoma never have any problem at all you just basically can wear it around your neck when you are at TSA replace controlled place that needs it. just show it to them and there when do you enter. does not even have to come out of the little lanyard holder.
it works as purpose designed
it's called an ID holder for a reason it holds IDs a TWIC card as an ID..
hard to fathom that I'm sure
in the holder it doesn't get cracked it doesn't get bent it's like an ID card when you work for a business it's a simple lanyard.
that's why would the number of people that were damaging your TWIC cards they decide to make it easier to protect it by giving you a lanyard and you simply slide it in I guess the concept is hard to understand.
or if you get it in the mail do they not give you a lanyard I don't get mine in the mail I go down to the port and renew it ever since it began back in the late 2000s.
so after I do my fingerprint checking at TSA I simply return and it's there in its brand-new lanyardLast edited: Jul 9, 2019

I keep it in the case they give you. Use it a half dozen times a year.
9417 and Trucker Kev Paid Tourist Thank this. -
I hate giving out DL # if I don't have to. -
I got my 1st one in '08 because we supposedly needed them to get on the DSV's leaving out of Morgan city, New Iberia, Fourchon. I quit working in the Gulf in '10 & it was never looked at by anyone. I got it renewed for trucking & only used it as a secondary ID once, maybe twice..
OP, keep it in the case & lanyard it came with.. Makes you look super official..
