I can't see the pic but I'm assuming it's a daycab and probably Yellow. There is a system that allows a truck to connect the dolly to the rear of the truck frame and run it as part of the truck. The first fifth wheel slides up to be out of the way while running it in this conficguration. When you pull doubles you unhook the dolly and slide the first fifth wheel back into place.Ducks Thanks this.

Yep, I think your right. There is a thread around here w/pic of a guy hooking one up. I forgot what the exact name of it.
-
What caught my eye was the tread, or lack of, on the rear tires.

Is this the one, RT?

i dont really understand the point
in what situation would u need the dolly to join with the tractor? i know u have to pull it around the yard to put in front of your rear trailer when setting up for doubles, but why not just use the pintle?
i also noticed it looks like theres no tread at all on the dolly tires -
You know I never understood why companies would pay extra for that either unless they use the extra axle on the tractor to haul hevier trailers when not pulling doubles.
-
ok i think i understand from looking at that other thread
they keep the dolly locked in like this, and actually pull vans with the 5th wheel of the dolly when it is "jiffed"
then for example they drop the van at a certain location, and if they need to pick up a set of doubles, they already have a dolly with them? all they have to do is unjif it or whatever and theres the dolly
is that what its for? -
we use these dollies still, the frame is narrow, it has two heavy alignment pins, and are air ride. I dont like them because you cant see them behind the front trailer when backing them to hook the set.
-
Yup, thats what its for and how its done.
