The charger for my laptop went out and I figured I'd take a look at it and maybe just replace whatever burnt out. I'm sure it went out due to overheating/thermal issues. It would charge adequately when it was cold but then would slow down after that, the first charge.

When I opened it up this is what was hiding inside...

It's full of silicone junk... Not going to spend $65-85 for a replacement that has the same crap stuffed in it and susecptable to th same thermal failure. It was 5 months old.... How is it supposed to stay cool?

Probably look for a variable power supply to replace it. Just need 19.5 volts 10.3 amps @200 watts. Any recommendations? Overkill is good.

That silicone, which is unlikely to actually be silicone, was likely acting as a heat sink also....

In any case, just go to Amazon and get a cheap one for the laptop. Most laptop power supplies are made in the same factory anyway, just the cheap ones got mislaid when they were loading them in the can to ship over here....

  4. yeah if you go to Amazon that's what I do just make sure you put in your model and the company who makes it a lot of times will these universal ones are a good match but you want to make sure that it comes up for yours...

Yeah, it's not the first charger I've had issues with. They all get hot, uncomfortable to the touch.

I'm thinking I could buy a variable power supply, for close to the same price as a replacement, and still have it as a backup for my next laptop or two.

This one is still under warranty.. I could send it in, and wait, for a replacement. Just not interested in that. :D

Thermal paste transfers the heat. Without it, you might catch fire....

Yeah, I can see what @ZVar was saying. it's not quite silicone. It's a bit firmer than that. Except one spot (the stinky spot) where it is hard and brittle. I'm not sure it is doing what it needs to do for this application.

I'm sure it works for someone sitting at home in an air conditioned house, but I'm mobile in some heat. I keep it out of sunlight but it needs a bit more TLC than that.

Just get a cheap fan to blow on the charger while it is plugged in. Maybe even build/buy a cradle for it so air can get all around the thing. It doesn't even need to be chilled air, just cooler than the charger. That brittle spot came from overheating.

Just turn it on its edge. Let the flat sides dissipate the heat.

I like to over complicate and over engineer solutions
