I am looking for a few O/O who would be willing to be interviewed for some research I am doing regarding obtaining authority.

I am evaluating the viability of being an Owner Operator in these current times and would love to speak with 2-3 people willing to share honestly their experience has been.

I would compile my findings and post for those who have an interest in the information so for the participants you would know that the information obtained would ultimately go toward making this business that we all love BETTER.

If you are interested plz pm me

In order to PM back, you need 50 posts. I'm not sure drivers will share information just for it to be posted. I think you'll get more information if you post something about yourself, first.

How exactly would you propose to make the "business that we all love BETTER"? Unless your a Senator, you'll likely have little impact on the legal requirements regarding obtaining authority. Also, are you a driver? If you are and you have a job I think just about everyone on here would recommend keeping it, if the economic climate is your reason for switching to OO. (Unless its a really horrible job)

OO assume so much more risk than company drivers that it would be a bold move to switch from job security to enterprise in a time that many businesses are closing up shop. I don't mean to discourage you but I can tell you that the average OO position is not to be highly coveted at this point in time. If your jobless, on the other hand it isn't a bad idea to take a chance.

thx for your reply for starters...

as for me, i have been IN trucking since i was a month old when i took my first ride in a cabover Pete with my dad to montana! up to age 13 every school break & summer was spent on the road with my O/O dad, who unfortunately died in his truck at the HEB whse in San Antonio while his a load of produce was being unloaded...

so my first goal in life was to be a trucker like dad, and when I turned 21 i did that driving over the road mostly and some locally for years! I eventually got out of trucking into real estate (my other love) but i promised myself that i would keep my cdl active and buy me a truck one day..

over the years i have made runs for friends and have decided that this summer i will be buying a truck and i am just wanting to get some insight from those who are willing to share info about how they run their business as some already do here in this forum. based on what i learn, i would make the information available to those who are interested in knowing it which judging from many posts on here there are many people interested in the information!

Lastly, the reason i say this will BETTER the industry is because the more success-minded Owner Operators who do business the right way the BETTER it will make it for all Owner Operators and drivers as it will raise the standard and rates that we can charge. Part of the problem now is we have those who are willing to move their truck for literally pennies to their ultimate demise and detriment to the business as a whole...

I am interested in talking with a select few O/O's who are interested in sharing what they know and understand the big picture... those who have a crab mentality and are the negative types will either lie or not participate at all so they don't worry me... unfortunately for them these whiners are the guys always yapping on the cb & and at the truckstops and they will be forever miserable because they don't realize the problem lies in the 6' inches of space between their ears, not elsewhere...

so provided you feel compelled to share, AWESOME! if not, that's just as good... long post but it paints the whole picture,

BE SAFE & SEE YOU AT THE TOP!!!

trucking and real estate, both suicide businesses :biggrin_25526: I still do ok but the numbers go down day for day. Lost the glory of things years ago and wouldn't want any of my kids to enter the field. Either way, good luck on your ventures. As for getting your authority, not so complicated and expensive as people say. Best have a nice nest egg though and good, steady, and fast paying customers. STAY AWAY FROM QUICK PAY IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. Everyone has their hand out for pennies here and there, before you know it, you will be in poverty level.

:biggrin_25526: - regarding the statement suicide businesses...(funny) but not altogether true AT ALL depending on your perspective! i personally know of some people who are doing REALLY good in trucking and as for real estate in my personal/professional opinion this is a once in a lifetime opportunity... 4.5% interest rates, property selling for less than .50 on the dollar and a pent up demand for lease property! - for in investor minded real estate person like myself it doesn't get any better.

as for trucking, the bottom line to it is that it takes on average 10-15 trucks to get ANY commodity into the consumers home (clothes, electronics, food etc.) and regardless of fuel prices the wheels will keep turning! so there is plenty of opportunity - the question is one must prepared and positioned correctly to take advantage of it! i submit to you most people aren't....

personally my thought is i will be going after a niche - a specialized segment of the market to cater my services to. i don't want to compete on price i will compete on service and people pay for service...

my goal with this thread is to hopefully get a discussion and exchange of ideas from those who are compelled to share... and thanks for your response!

You're correct on that, needing products delivered is a necessity. 5 Trucks is sufficient to become a dedicated Carrier for any particular customer. Normally you don't get to decide what rates you will haul their products, unless there is a bid of contracts for these large Corporations.
But with 10-15 trucks, you would more than likely find a small to medium size Business to contract with them for hauling their products.
Many small to medium size Businesses "Love" to have their own Dedicated Carrier that is close by and their products Hauled when it's needed, rather than these businesses using Brokers to find a carrier to haul the product.

There are still Many products around that needs delivered. Most of the Large Trucking Companies go after the Large Businesses.
It is better to work with the smaller businesses. And many of them still pay well enough , in which you don't need to find a backhaul. The importance of developing a contract with a business is "Making yourself available for the product to be shipped, when they need it to be shipped on any specific day." That's the "Key" in finding yourself customers.

I have been trying to encourage people here on this forum, if ANYONE is to go Owner Op, then get your own Authority!, Having Your Own Authority, is the only Right way to go, and by finding your own Customers!

It's nothing but a Joke, being an Owner Operator leased on with a Trucking Company these days. It's these trucking companies that are making out financially, rather than the driver. And we have enough dingy Brokers around making more money off the drivers, than the driver himself.
GET RID OF THE MIDDLE MAN ! ! !
    And
Believe me, it is NOT Hard to find Customers!!

But they will give you the rates! You can negotiate it, depending on circumstances. Some are good, some are very good and some not so good.
The better customer, with the higher paying rate, you make them your Priority! That means, You Jump when they Call!
The lessor paying customers, you can negotiate the days you can ship their product.

What is your "Niche", GrandDaddy ??

Sounds like, you wanna be a Broker Service ?? :biggrin_2555:

WOW... that's a pretty great response, I (along with others) appreciate it!
As for me, I am still working on what niche to go after; not really trying to start a broker service but your advice is in-line with my thoughts.

my dad had his authority and got all of his loads himself and occassionally did a trip lease with a carrier when he really needed a backhaul from somewhere.

honestly, i like many, can't get the diesel out of my blood and simply LOVE trucks - oddly enough my dream truck is either KW K100 Aerodyne (BJ McKay) with a kitten 425 kitten under the hood or a Pete 362 110' cab... i love cabovers - weird right!

one more thing... being that i live in Houston i may go after medical freight as our medical center is the largest in the world! Over 160,000 people work there (and growing rapidly)....
