Hey! Moving down from Canada and this whole “bob tail insurance” is new to me.

First quote I got was #### near $2000 for basic insurance and another $10,000 for collision!!

That’s more than my WHOLE policy up here in Canada.

The reason question is do I need collision if I am pretty much never going to unhook my trailer? Just looking for some direction.....

Also.... I’m going to be driving in North Dakota pulling a water tanker.

Where are the best places to look for a policy around there>>>>?

You know insurance can be overkill it at times. I would base it off need. The what "if" day happened. I had a couple of those days in trucking and it cost me a lot more. I understand the cost of be profitable and unnecessary expenses. It is your call through. I would say cover yourself accordingly. Bobtail and collision are two separate things. Are you going to be leased onto a company? The collision is going to protect your equipment. The company is going to require you to have bobtail insurance. All the best to you.

If you are leasing to a company, you will need the insurance, even if you are hooked to a trailer. You are not insured by most of them unless you are under dispatch.
Those prices seem excessive though, it pays to shop around, and sometimes it is cheaper to go through the company you are leasing on to.

    ibcalm19 Thanks this.

If you owe any money on your truck you should have collision insur. to protect the bank but the money you pay for it can be much less if your loss are few and far between, Call around for different Quotes ?

On that collision, your deductible can be a big deal on the price of it too.

That was with a $2500 deductible- it jumped up another $2000 overall with a $500 deductible.

Your uninsured motorist will pay it, if no one knows who did it.
The only time I ever turned in a claim was when a wheel and tire came out of the sky in Alberta and took my hood and bumper. My truck was paid off and I had no collision, but my uninsured motorist took care of it.
