    Hey guys,

My current set up is a Cobra 25 LTD Classic (peaked and tuned of course) with a Palomar 225. The radio works fine but I was just considering going up to a little bit nicer high end radio. A friend of mine has a Ranger 2950 that I like but I wanted to see what everybody else suggests. Whatever radio I get will immediately go to the CB shop that I use as soon as I get it so it can be worked on, but does anybody know the cheapest place to find a Stryker, Ranger or etc?

    anyway, I need some suggestions...

I have a 2950 that was great for years, but now slips off freq - probably needs an oscillator or something. I liked it a lot, but don't expect to get any use out of the split channel functions unless you have friends who are into that. It has a bit of a learning curve to it, but it's not bad. Mine was tuned to put out 27w all around the bands, no matter what freq. it's on. They, like others, can put out more if tuned to a specific freq. (like 19) but if you use it for what it's designed for, you'll want power everywhere, and from what I hear, that's a bit of a trick for some mechanics.
I guess it's easy to peak for one channel.

Yeah I will probably use my same antenna, I have a firestick. I had a francis that i liked better and SWR was a little better, but the package says the francis can only hold 150 watts and i'm putting out a lot more than that.

The 2950, is more of a SSB radio, rather than a AM...If your going to mostly use the radio for AM, then I would look more at the General Lee's, or Stryker 440...Both of these radios are very loud, and get great reports. And both have the Mosfet Finals.

Only "Down-Side" to the Stryker, is it's Bright-Blue Lights...Even on dim, if you do allot of night diving, it can be distracting. There is a Mod that can be done to the radio however, that can dim the lights even more than what the switch does, or you can even have a shop install a switch so you can turn off the blue-ring lights around the face of the radio, for night driving...

Another radio worth looking at, is the Superstar SS158DX by Ranger...It has SSB, AM, FM, and all the other bells & whistles, and cost around the same as what the General Lee's, and Strykers...

One guy I know has a stryker and the other guy has a Ranger 2950. Jessejames, it's funny you say that the Ranger is more of a SSB radio because i swear this guy has trouble with his radio. He will be transmitting just fine and plus he has a Palomar 650 pushing it but as far as his ears go, He can't hear crap. but, that could be the way his radio is set up.

The other guy I know was showing me the other day that he could make his Stryker pick up on Ham channels? Is this right? I haven't really researched them but that would be pretty cool. Nobody was talking when we were listening to them though.

I used the 2950 mostly for skip on sideband and one quiet little "secret" channel my friends and I would frequent...often getting guys up in canada into the convos. The 2970 was a better choice though, having more power.
