The acert's aint bad motors other than the chity fuel mileage.Once you throw away the stock muffers and put "straight through" muffers on it will help some on the fuel milage. My MSX Cat brake got weake and I took it to a Cat shot in Denver to have it checked out and to have a overhead ran on it. They said there was nothing wrong with the Cat brake, the truck did run better after the overhead but the Cat brake was way off. When I would turn it on it sounded like air comming out of a ballon instade of the crasp cracking sound.
The problem was a broken hold down bolt on the brake and a broken rocker shaft. My "normal" cat shop that I go to found it and said there was a service bulletin out for new hold bolts and if there were broken rocker shafts to replace all the exhaust rockers at no charge. Why the shop in Denver missed that is beyond me.
The BXS was the first of the Acerts then MXS and the NXS. To run a overhead on a BXS you have to take the Cat brake off to set the valves, MXS and NXS you dont. The NXS have updated intake valve actuators and are more problem free than the BXS or MXS (I have done replaced all but 1 on my MXS).

Everything on my motor has been running great since I had the whole overhead swapped out down in Virgina about 75,000 miles ago. I'm guessing time will tell to see if the problem is fixed. But on the bright side the valvetrain seems to stay together in the higher rpms. I have been running in the 1300 rpm range and dropping a gear at the bottom of a big hill and the motor will pull now. Heck I've even sled pulled last Friday and left the line at 2100 rpm. The motor bogged down to about 1900 and then we just trucked on down the track and the rpms rose back up to about 2050 with no problem.

Update for me: they replaced the head, and as I sit here I am waiting to see if the job will be finished today.
I was given a Penske POS to drive so I could complete my run, and I do not see how those other drivers can drive a Century class. Awful! No wonder those big company drivers seem so worked up all the time.

I have been informed that my particular Cat motor is an SDP. Not an MXS or NXS or even BXS.
I still have no idea what it all means, except these ain't like the Cat's I grew up around. -
Just immagine if those wheelholders ever drove a real truck and then had to go back -
About 2 months ago I had to go through Schneiders "Spring Training" which included a test drive with one of their instructors. The instructor was just beside himself during the whole ride. Not only was he thrilled with the smooth ride, but also by how easily the truck picked up speed with 45,000 in the box. I just kinda laughed and he got mad at me. When I told hime I was laughing cause I was barely touching the throttle he understood. I told him he could take it for a spin if he wanted, but he passed on the offer.

Did u bring your glove and bat?LOL

Nope ,but I should of brought my dunce cap for a couple of the company drivers that were in the class...nuff said.

I'm guessin but a schnieder instructer has prolly been driving for like what 4 maybe 5 years. kinda like making somebody a trainer after 1 year experience
-
Believe it or not all the guys that I have dealt with for "training" have been driving for at least 15+ years. The guy I mentioned has been driving for Schneider for over 20 years. Now they do have some pretty young ones, but I haven't seen them...yet.
