you should have two bars on the truck.

The backup bar in your car does you no good the one time you finally forget it. (and you will forget it at least once)

Also cutting one down 6 to 8 inches for stepdecks and tight spots is AWESOME. and still makes a good backup bar.

But depending on who you run for (if its a mega like tmc or melton, then probably follow the "rules"), but if other trucks aren't tarping the loads, the bol doesn't habe anything on it specifically about tarping, and the weather forecast is clear, strap and roll.

Biggest thing is to figure out what works for you. I'll ask for forgiveness before I ask for permission, and in 5yrs of this, I haven't had to do it yet. Just gotta be smart about it.

Also, beware dispatchers and brokers that tell you how high priority a load is, especially if its just going to a supplier and not an actual customer/jobsite. Be the guy they know they can put on the load because you'll get it there, but not the guy that will take a load no matter what, especially if it adversely affects you with your hos, parking, etc. This takes a little time to learn, but you'll get to that point.

If it ain't raining our policy is just strap and roll. I've got one OSB mill that I go to that won't let you leave without tarping if there's even the slightest chance of rain. Other than that, everyone else has the "once it's on your truck, it's not my problem" mind set.

I'm in a day cab and on a dedicated account so I deal with the same people all the time. I go all over NC, SC, VA, and parts of TN but I see the same faces a few times a month and have built a decent relationship with all of them. That helps a lot when it comes to handling issues that may arise.
