You are perfectly free to feel that way. However, I am telling you from PERSONEL EXPERIENCE I have gone from a cold stop never touching the throttle and not using the clutch after starting and went all the way from 1st to 6th gear and at no time lugged the engine while on flat ground. I admit I did do this with an empty trailer. Also, I am NOT the only driver to report doing this. Some truck driving schools teach this as well.

As a part of an established curriculum, I can today confirm none. As I stated in post 24 I said I know an instructor that told me he teaches this to help the students learn to shift. I do know that at one point in the past C1 in Indy taught it because one of their ex instructors is today in a carrier safety dept and told me they did it. I am sure this can be easily verified to see if they still do.

Also, it is not engine/transmission destruction if done correctly, stop being so melodramatic.

How would teaching someone to float at idle in the low gears on flat ground empty teach the first #### thing about shifting a big truck? Especially when ive not seen a school that even teaches floating as offical curriculum?

So as we have confirmed, this is empty... and flat ground... obviously no traffic... when would this ever in the reality of trucking be applicable? What would the value of such action be? I can drive at 90 with a knee.. don't make it a good idea....

Of course, it is not something a driver should be doing. In fact, if I owned a truck and discovered my driver was doing it I would bury my foot up their butt.

I learned how to drive way back when in an old split shift Mack logging truck, with my father using the (FIST) system about clutch usage. And god help me if I ever lugged that engine to a stop.

I don't know what percentage of the industry is today using XY Autoshifters, but it is a lot. In another generation manual transmissions while still around will be hard to get a driver into. In other words more to owner-operators and custom trucking applications.

Some people have serious problems picking up the right rhythms of shifting, and others never will. I can't remember how many times I have seen drivers take off and by the time they hit 3 and 4th gear they are grinding. Some instructors try to show the students how to shift, and how to double clutch. I don't think schools are teaching floating.

In other words, this knowledge most of us old hands take for granted is slowly going to die.

I think I have covered my position on all of this, I still stand behind all my words AND I know I am not alone. Time to thread bail!

So you advocate against the thing you are claiming then mic drop?

    Classy driver....

Ive taught dozens of people how to drive double clutch. I wait until they can run up and down no grinding before i teach floating.

For the record i understand what you are saying, and i can see it working under perfect conditions... (with the clutch) but that is no way to teach. Your using idle speed to teach double clutching and as soon as they put the skinny in, they will grind. Nothing will work the same way as idle..

    Just sayin.
