I have a 2006 International with a ISX 435. I have had loww fuel mileage since I bought it used. I replaced the air cooler. I raised horse power to 450. That brought me from 4.5 to 3ound 5. I still have trouble pulling hills. I also have a noise frequently. It sounds like back pressure. Could this be egr issue? Any ideas would be helpful. Thomas

The noise sounds kinda like the air releasing from the compressor. Only a little louder and more distinct. I was told I could raise it to 500 hp but it would be governed # 435. I called another cummins shop and he said that doesn,t sound right. I was told the rpms could not be raised pass 1750.

No, I did not know that. I have talked with cummins in charlotte nc and had it in there. Is that a sign the egr is going out? Would it send a code? It is getting more frequent but no codes. The egr would have an effect on my mpgs wouldn,t it. I appreciate your help

no actually its a sign that it works, it is the sweetest sound a truck has, at times we start up ours and give it a little rev just to hear it, its cool, after the motor starts and warm up a bit the engine sound changes and the purring starts am i correct?

I don,t think it is the same it comes from the right side of the cab. It hasn,t always done it. I just noticed it when I replaced air cooler.I am sure it has something to do with low power

What transmission are you running? If you have an,I'm sorry for even suggesting, Eaton Autoshift,it could be the tranny. I used to drive for a company with 05-07 International 9400i's with 435 Cummins ISX and Eaton Autoshift transmissions. Sometimes, mostly in high range, while it was shifting you would hear a grunt. That's the best I can describe it.Like a high air pressure release but a very low pitch.Sounded like it was from the right side of the cab kinda twards the front.Turned out the transmission had 5 gears with missing teeth. Never threw a code or anything. Are you throwing any white smoke? Had the EGR on same truck go and it blew white smoke from the truckstop I was in all the way across I-39 to the get off ramp on the other side of the interstate when it finally went.Started out with little puffs of white smoke though.Another thing to look for.Look around your EGR for coolant leaks also. Let us know if or what you figure out with her and the best of luck to you driver!

Check all the intake fittings if it sounds like an air leak or something.I know they have variable geometry turbo chargers.Don't know if the turbo actuator might be having issues or something also? Losing any coolant?
