Drive at night sleep during the day. No traffic and always parking in the AM. And my favorite trucker path review is Has Beer.

"A Swift truck just pulled out so now we have gone from 0 to 3 parking spots available." It never gets old in the comments section.

Don’t try that in Virginia or your nap will be a short one...North Carolina can get a little prickly about ramp parking also.

One good thing about driving in the northwest is the abundance of paved or graded pullouts built for chaining or to avoid harsh weather.

So long as there's not a sign that says for chaining only.. You are probably good. Peaceful too.

Parking is perhaps the toughest part of the job for new drivers. I get an idea where I want to park next before I even start my pre-trip. Look on truckers path for truck stops with 200+ spots. Read reviews to see how many are payed spots. Then look for all truck stops within an hour of your intended stop time. Try and get there before 4-5 PM. If your plan changes during your day, for any reason, start the processes over with new intended stop time.

Some truck stops generally have parking at all hours so remember them when you find them. (I-85 NC Exit 157 Petro is one) Your life will be a lot easier if you start your clock with your next 10 hour break in mind.

Sometimes, depending on appointment times you will be screwed. Usually when that happens I'll bunker down in an industrial area and hope for no ticket. If you think you could possibly run out of hours at a customers, always put yourself on sleeper after 5 mins of on duty. Then you might only have to bunker down for 6 hours or so or whatever is left of your 10.

    Don't be a Moth.

That's what I call the drivers that flock to those neon sign lit up truck stops like moths to a flame.

Develop a pattern of parking at smaller places most will bypass until they're SOL elsewhere.
I've seen TAs overflowing, and the little fuel stop across the overpass that holds 4 trucks with only one.. or none there.

You'll hardly ever catch me at a big chain.
I've got hidey holes all over the country.

Next time when you have an hour left, you're out of time.

Practice that. All you got is 10 or 13 max until you get the hang of it.

It's a lot easier to find a spot while it's still light as well when you can see more.
