Hi guys and gals. Im new to the site and to trucking. Not really new but new for me. My dad is a trucker and his father was a trucker so I figured trucking is breed into me so why not jump into it. I am currently attending CDL training at Nu-Way Truck Driving School in St. Louis. The experience hasnt been too bad, the trainers are atleast cool. Im set to graduate the 5th of June 09. I havent decided which company Im going to try for yet. Ive gotten advice from my dad, the trainers, and listened to the bull that the recruiters have come in and said. Right now I am trying to get on at TMC. Im open to suggestions with whom else to apply. Im a Army Veteran and I want someone who does the Apprenticeship training so I can use my GI Bill and make that extra money while in training. I have a wife and 3 small kids to feed so that extra money will help significantly. Home time is also an important aspect I am leaning on. Any help good or bad on who to go with is greatly appreciated. Thanks to all who write me back.

Hi, retlow8, Welcome to our Truckers Forum! We hope you enjoy your stay and please read our RULES. Please remember, you are NEVER allowed to post e-mails, ad links, trucking company links, personal site links, and such ANYWHERE in this forum. Thanks for understanding! We hope to help you and get to know you soon! Thanks, retlow8!
retlow8, do you have a question about how to do something? Try our FAQ section or you can PM me or a Moderator (50 posts not required to PM a Mod) to ask a question! Also, you can read through our Truckers Forum Information Center! -
Ret-low8, welcome aboard. Even though you have the wife/kids at home, you need to be flexable re: home time, while training. Plan on being out awhile. If you start wanting to get home, you'll be on the bad side of dispatch. FYI.....

If you are going to use your GI Bill then you are really limited to a company or school approved by them... best is to check with the Veterans Admin...
Honestly, as a Veteran myself... I wouldnt trust half of these "trade" schools with any sort of program that uses the benifits... Stick with a "real" school, like a community college, University, or State School if you want to use these benifits.
These "trade" schools will convienently take all your benifit money to pay their various "fees" and tuition.... and then approve you for a student loan also...
I cant speak from experiance on using your GI Bill for a trade school, or apprenticship, but can speak on using it at the community college level taking classes FULL time... The first 2 months usually paid for tuition, fees and books, the rest of the semester I was able to pocket...
University or State college works the same way... those places are a little more expensive.
I wonder how the VA determines ones status in a "trade" or apprenticship... for sure, at the college level... you had to be enrolled in a certain amount of credits and be above a certain GPA to continue to receive your checks, with the VA checking up on you monthly to ensure you are enrolled. if you enrolled in 1/2 the credit requirement, you were considered half time and got half the monthly payment.
Also, from my experiance... You can opt for the VA to loan you the first 2 months up front for each semester, but you will not recieve your 3rd check until you complete the third month. If you opt not for the first 2 months, you recieve your check as the months are completed. If you do not complete the semester or drop classes that put you under the credit minimmum, you will be on the hook to pay back that money BEFORE they will issue any more GI Bill Benifits for another semester or school.
Its been 10 years, Im sure the amount per month has changed... but I doubt much of the rules have changed... Its a great program... make sure you use it for something you really want to do...
I kinda new a guy who went to a "technical" college... I didnt get all the details, but I know he signed a loan agreement or a promissary note for each semester and the school was VA approved... his monthly payments were sent to the school against that loan... for some reason, he stopped going, the VA stopped paying and he was stuck with the "balance of the loan" plus he was on the hook to pay back the VA for the semester he didnt complete... I just remember him saying his credit report was a mess over the whole thing... hit not only by the School loan, but the VA will report you too. -
I left this last part out.
Bottom line... The VA is your best place for any and all information on what you can and cant use it on.
I wasnt trying to scare you, but the VA is there to help you, they have rules and are not there to screw you...
Trade Schools, Technical Colleges, and Apprenticeships are businesses out to make a profit... dont sign anything until you understand what you are getting into, and what you are getting out of it... dont be afraid to take the information back to the VA and have them review it with you...
State Schools (Universities, Community) I wouldnt worry about these places... just make sure you can afford the one you choose with the benifits you recieve... I still had to work while attending classes, but it would have been a huge struggle without the GI Bill. -
hey, Retlow8..Just joined trucker's forum myself cause I have questions for more experienced drivers, but I worked for Averitt last year, due to my own fault, I left (and am now really regretting it). went to Swift (bad idea)...Averitt gets you home every weekend if you want, trucks are new or nearly new, great equipment, you are allowed to have inverter for your t.v.microwave etc. mMy only 2 complaints working for them for 5 months are: 1)must be clean shaven and wear uniform and 2)many load assignments are dispatched late or give you just enough time to make it. Other than those 2 complaints Averitt is top-notch especially compared to SWift....You need to be home often enuff to see your kids grow up, and keep stability in your marriage. Most companies (from what I hear mostly)don't care if you ever get home. With Swift they don't mind if you sit at a truck stop for 2,3,-5 days w/out a load and when you finally do get home supposedly for 3 days, they will be calling you on day 1 wanting you back in the truck and then giving you a lousy 250 mile run then stuck sitting again. I say try Averitt...........Pizzaeater

U2exit, been wanting to ask you, see you on PD.net. I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but are you wearing a collar of sorts in your photo?
-
Allow Me- I understand that while out with the trainer in training I will be gone for weeks at a time. Im fine with that, I just dont want to have to do it when I get my own truck. Throughout the week is fine with me once I get my own. I just want to have the weekends to me and mines. Know any decent companies that offer this?
U2- Im already in school and paying for it out of my pocket. Im looking for a good company that offers the Department of Labor approved apprenticeship program. Something like Werner and TMC have. If I get on at one of these companies then I can draw on my VA benefits while in the 12 month program. Though I dont want to have to go to Werner.
Pizzaeater- Thanks for the advice. I have no intention of going to Swift. If I REALLY have to then I have no choice. Its either job or no job and in this economy you take what you can right? But, no, I havent even considered Swift and still dont. Clean shaven? Like bare faced or neatly groomed? -
What are you talking about? Sounds like you are trying to be a wise guy.
No collar. -
U2exit, honest, your photo looks to me like a left camera shot of your left arm with the tattoo, and I swear, you're wearing a white collar of sorts, possibly a medical brace? I'm not messin' with you, was just curious. Honest.
