Hey guys. I just leased my truck onto an intermodal company out of chicago. That company is starting to do business in NJ. They have 5 owner ops total in NJ so far. Wednesdays are slow, I get it. No work today. Did two #### loads yesterday. More #### 20 mile loads coming tomorrow.

I was told there is work. Two days in and I'm already losing my patience here. Grossing $400 a day isn't gonna cut it for me! Maybe some people like working 7am-11am but that's no way to run a business.

Is intermodal just slow in NJ right now or is this company just bottom of the barrel? I'm not posting a company name here for obvious reasons...

What's a good company to do intermodal/ rail yard work for here in NJ?

P.S. I'd stick around, but I've been in this business long enough to know that if things are not working out it's time to run. I cant keep losing money sitting home.

Any advice/ good company recommendations greatly appreciated!

Talk to them tell them you need more work or you will start looking elsewhere I find honest communication works best if they turn you loose for wanting more work that's not where you want to be anyways

I got a couple loads for tomorrow. If I dont get a few more by the time I'm done with those, I'll be calling them.

I just can't understand why a company would onboard owner ops and have no work for them. What is the business purpose in that?

Honestly they dont care that's your money and your problem why buy a truck when it doesn't make sense they can hire you and what you do with the rest of your day is your business

I bought my truck with the idea of getting my own authority within the next 6 months. This whole lease was just a hold over, that's all. Now I'm thinking that was a very bad idea and I should have just jumped all the way in on my own.

We are slow out of cleve ohio. They were going to sign on one guy but it fell through. We have favoritism in dispatch also. Terminal manager has 5 or more of their own trucks. Not the best situation for a leased op. Guess who gets dispatched first? Sucks more and more all the time. Been here 13 years..but may jump.?

I did the intermodal/container gig thing back in the early 80’s when I became an owner op. Company was pretty steady work. All owner ops. But walk away when I found out the grass is greener on the other side and never looked backed again.

I dealt with that crap in the 90's. Dispatcher saw how much some of us OO were making and he started buying his own trucks. Didn't take long before the best runs were never available anymore. He ended up leaving and taking a bunch of customers with him. That was the end of the company. (It didn't help the owner was a coke head either)
