I'm not getting into this to pick on anyone, the fact is that many people that aren't involved with trucking are scared by trucks and sometimes the drivers of those trucks.

The FBI in its jurisdiction just isn't that involved with trucking except as used in committing crimes, so it doesn't surprise me that people would interpret the warning as that truckers would be responsible, reading with more understanding makes you realize that it isn't the truckers that are being warned against, it is the place where most people don't know anyone else there making it easier for something bad to happen.

Never accept a ride from strangers, well I have, but only when close to home. I wouldn't think of accepting a ride from one in Chicago or Lake Station, and border areas have been especially dangerous almost forever.

My Truck can be pin pointed to with-in 50' anywhere on the map.
We run a D2Link system from Nextel that has a panic/break down option.
Once the button is pushed dispatch is alerted as well as the local Law.
They dont want the freight sitting anywhere but a secured dock.
Most of our freight justifies an Escort, but this system has been proven reliable.

I can still hide my tractor, but all the trailers have tracking beacons.
Only thing I dont like about the system is that it can play back a 24 hr loop :biggrin_25510:

    Hello all,

I'm new to these boards, and new to trucking. In fact, going to training on Monday so I have no experience in these matters. However, I do have some life experience, being 49 and having already lived through several careers.

I was an attorney for a number of years in my earlier life. That experience taught me many things. One thing I learned is never judge a book by its cover. You just can't tell what a person is capable of. How many times have people been surprised to learn their brother was capable of molesting a child or their mother stole a half million dollars from her job with the church? Never saw it coming. Being a "low life" comes from the inside and can't be judged by how often you take a bath or cut your hair.

Crime is almost always one of opportunity. For this reason alone suspicion will rest on those who have the most opportunity. Truckers, traveling salesmen, anyone who travels as a living has more opportunity to use those travels as a tool to commit a crime. I really don't think it has anything to do with what percentage of low-lifes a particular industry has in it.

Truckers draw suspicion, I suspect, because they have opportunity within the areas these crimes are committed. But I can guarantee the FBI looks at any group that travels these routes, not just truckers.

Trucking is a proud industry essential to the US. I'm proud to be able to join it and look forward to working within it. But like any human endeavor, there are those participating within that will shed bad light upon the rest of us. Just means the vast majority of us who are responsible need to work that much harder to overcome the negatives.

Ok... enough blah, blah, blah from me. :biggrin_2551:

I drive an old truck with a mech. Engine! No qualcomm or people net or anyother tracking device lol (evil chuckle) I'm an honest trucker tho my log book is 100% accurate so it will tell you where I have been!!!! ;). As many people are killed by truckers as I'm sure anything else. I wouldn't hitch hike period but I would feel safer with a trucker than I would some 4 wheeler I met at a gas station. As cheap as a bus ticket is these days to **** with hitch hiking anyway.

Lol! Actually, I retired from law before all of this. But I think we all see the hurt being spread over much of the economy.

I have an ex that used to hitchike all over the country and it seems like the best rides he got were from truckers. He had a couple confrontations from people that drove cars but said he never really had any problems with truckers. One year he got the bright idea to buy a one way ticket from St. Louis to the Virgin Islands. He brought like 20 bucks with him lol. About a week into it he called me whining and asking me if I'd loan him a ticket home. I told him I would but just to the contenental United States. I got him a ticket to Maimi. He arrived there on Christmas Eve and hitched a ride with a trucker all the way back to Cape. It was a good thing, since it was all snowy out. The trucker even gave him $50 and said Merry Christmas.

(He did eventually pay me back....a year later. I made him pay me interest. :D )
