Everyone is going to be late for one reason or another, period. Those that say the have never been late are new or liars. That said it's how you handle it when it happens that counts. Call ahead let everyone know what's happened as it happens, tell the truth and only the truth, and do your best to recover. Sounds to me like you did all those things. Like the previous poster said "Tomorrow is another day".

And, yes, "tomorrow is another day..." -
Heh, how many times was I late in '08? I generally do P&D for an LTL company and meet only 20% of my appointment times. In fact, we often get two companies scheduling me in for pick-ups at the exact same time and decide which appointment to meet by reviewing the consequences.
We pick up almost daily at a cereal mill that will rake us over the coals if we're late, and sometimes we actually dispatch an extra truck just make sure we're there on time. However, we also pick up at another cereal mill 50 miles away that has no consequences for late pickups and consequently has completely given up on us ever showing up on time. In fact, once I actually showed up right at my appointment time and the shipper very nearly fell out of his chair! -
I had a 07:00 Sunday morning load appointment at shell chemical a few months ago. I had done a reset at the hotel and bobtailed down to the terminal to grab my empty tank around 06:00. Got in the gate, backed under it, checked the clean out caps and pretripped the truck. While I was punching stuff into the qualcom I saw a flash of light. It had been raining a little so I figured it was a lightning flash.
I pulled around to the gate with 30 minutes to go 5 miles down the road. Gate won't open. I back up and pull up to it several times, still doesn't work. There was a local driver on the yard who tells me it is supposed to open automatically but points out that some of the lights in the lot had gone out.
I wound up calling the terminal manager who came down and punched in the gate code. Still didn't open. He ended up calling the shop foreman who told us about a lever under the front of the gate motor that allowed us to push it open.
I wound up being 30 minutes late. They had me sit for 8 hours before I was loaded. I still got paid detention pay but the company didn't get to bill Shell for it. -
As a 4-wheeler, I can attest to being late a couple times. I have had doctors appointments scheduled back to back (dentist and yearly physcial) and have had to explain to the second doctors office that. As I am almost never late, I get a okay we will fit you in. However I have never shown up late for class in college. My college professors will embarass you or kick you out.

How can you be late if you are allowed 1 hr grace and you were checked in within 45 min? past your appointment?... Here's a suggestion...... have a back-up alarm clock. You have a back-up ink pen, right? If you wear glasses, you have a spare pair, right? An extra water jug in case you run out, right? Make sense?

I have used two different alarm sources for many years.
I also had a multi-stop run from Michigan to Texas. The two in texas were the same company, and 5 minutes apart. The first stop would always hold me up, always.
The second stop would give me a dirty look, and angrily ask "why are you late?"
I'd tell them to call the other location, I was there on time. Ask them, they held me up. It's a shame they couldn't communicate with each other when they do that. -

I was an hour and half late yesterday for my first drop off. Tight load when I accepted it. The shipper held me up for 4 hours. We have to log 100% legal, so I had to shut down after 10.75 hours of driving, 60 miles from my customer. I take my 10 hours and log my 15 minutes for my PTI. Seemed like I would never leave. The customer didn't even care I was late. I sure did. I hate being late. I have 2 Screaming Meanies, most times I wake up before they go off.

I'm never late.. the load might be though.
That's what I like about my line of work.
We setup most of our own schedules.
