Shifting a ten speed

Try to get your self to relax too. Its a rhythm. If it don't go, don't force it. Back off, clutch it again and drop it in gear. It does not take much force of your hand, many new guys pull and push to hard, start to panic. When I was young and green, this is what I did. Less effort, control yourself. Relax you will get it.

 

Solid advice. I do the same thing every night leaving the industrial park. Up to 4th or 5th gear without giving it a bunch of throttle, I don't real stand on it until I'm in 3rd out on the road. I didn't want to say anything about shifting low like that because I didn't know if that was a "incorrect" method and didn't want to give anyone any potential bad habits I have but since you out it out there I'll totally agree.

 

Will be learning that shorty in driving school. I can’t wait.

 

The first 5 gears you can shift about as fast as you can throw the stick. Out of gear as soon as you let off the throttle, slide it in the next hole and back on the gas. Go easy, don't wind the rpms up.

The high side, you'll need to pause a bit more between gears. Quit looking at the tach and just listen to the sound of the engine. Throw it back into gear when it sounds about right.

Shifting up or down a hill, you need to be quicker on the shifts. Flat ground a little more delay.

It just takes practice (and a little bit of wear and tear on the transmission, lol).

You need to stay off the real big mountains.

Jacobs braking operations and so on because when you are downgrade and you take her out of gear you are going to either get to the next one or you become a sled on a death ride once your brakes thermal out and then fade and smoke.

Maybe a hill of few hundred feet high with a straight runout so you don't really screw it up bad to endanger anyone. Its not common to shift downgrade because I liked to keep one gear most of all the way down cold brakes.

All of that will come to you. Winter is coming so now is a good time to learn.

 

As long you have no bad habits and forget everything about shifting a car. You will be fine.

Just remember School teaches enough to get that CDL without killing or breaking anything. Your real learning starts with your first load.

That's they way they told use to shift for that reason of not having to match the gears. I never see anybody talk about it. You don't need 500HP or all the torque to get rolling. Plus you don't stress the drive line and everything.

 

Progressive shifting and standard block shifting are not always taught to newbies.

Even today if I had to put 500 horses and torque against a load facing the sky... I say a little prayer. IF something will fail it will be that drive train.
