N14 oil leak

I didn't know all of this before I pulled mine off, then I went to talk to the mechanic, he told me it was no big deal. I went to the cummins dealer got the Jake Brake gasket, and I got the Followers cover gasket to size.

Before you take off the cover behind the starter, you have to take the valve cover off. Then take off the ''Jake Brake'' there are 6 12 point 7/16 bolts that hold it. Then you take off the Rockers 4 12 point 9/16 holding those. Then you pull up the rods and tie them up so they don't fall and break, or if you have room to take them out, do so, but make sure they go back in the same order so you won't have to re-adjust the valve lash.

Then once you got that going proceed to take off the cover behind the starter. Clean everything up, put a new gasket on it, and reassemble everything.
Make sure you get the followers go on the shaft when you put the cover back, not below it, and the rods up at the top go back in place in the designated for them spot in the cover its self. Well I ran into this problem then started looking online for answers on how to fix this problem.
Because every mechanic I called was busy or couldn't come out of his shop to fix it.
Thats how I found this forum. Once I figured it out, while fixing it I made pictures in the process, then decided I could help someone else.
And the cheapest I found was $350 to fix it.

 

Help! Mine are leaking at the front cover, behind the air compressor (air system not AC) I got and estimate and shop wanted a pretty coin . With freight this slow, I'd rather do it myself and save a few bucks.

I've replaced an injector in my N14 once, so I do have some skills. Just a little worried about the cam followers.

You might wanna try to tighten the bolts first, cause that front cover has something to do with ignition and even I wouldn't mess with it unless I've seen it done before, and as far as the pics go my computer crashed so I lost everything. I use my cellphone for accessing the net

 

Yep. I tightened them and some were a bit loose. I'm afraid though, that the gasket may have broke thru so it will continue to leak.

 

usually the gaskets are intact....the problem is cummins torque spec is only 35 ft lbs on those bolts. then if you have to shim the followers, it doesn't create a real good seal :/

to reseal all cam followers it may cost up to 2k in labor....it is a time consuming job.

 

I just loosened up the bolts and smeared on a little gray silicone and tightened up to spec ! No leaks no problem been two yrs already

 

I was wondering if that would work. Still have to pull the compressor but nothing up top. How far out can you wiggle the cam follower cover with the pushrods still in?
