A cat will out pull any other I agree...sadly they don't make truck engines now, or I would have a cat in them all.
Heavy duty everything, tri drive, engine driven PTO wet kits, heavy duty headache racks, big fuel tanks, big def tank, big hydraulic tank for the wet kit, almost every option I could get including the 14 speeds, all in they are $242,769 each. I added some $100k plus in options to them compared to a light frame tandem. From the front ends on back, the headache racks alone with chain lockers and tool boxes are a small fortune. Heck a wet kit, especially engine driven not just a tranny take off, and the extra large hydraulic tank so i have more than enough capacity is a pricey add on. I hate a transmission PTO though. Oh yes because they have to start in sub zero temps I upgraded the batteries to, it has two extra batteries in it, and they will run a block heater and oil pan heater, to warm it up some, then if its going to drain the batteries too low it will shut them off. Extra large alternator.
Strobe lights and spot lights facing forward, backward and to the sides on the headache rack. Even a 4 horn unit on the roof. I didn't option them lightly, and tired of adding crap after i get them so the dealer can do it.

I used the old 350 figure in parody. I consider big horse the easiest way to get work done. And they can do quite alot.

Consider the old 350 cummins big cam, I put it on a 5% grade and she goes up at 19 mph on a good day at 80K put on a 350 mack of the early 90's and she will lift that weight at 45 mph. My last three trucks essentially ran it at speed limit. Once I had the unique experience of touching the brakes upgrade to keep her speed. It's a 4 mile grade, a natural barrier to western PA and beyond. Small stuff but still.

When you introduce greater than 500 horses and adequate torque close to 1900 and up you have a truck that will have less issues with the territory in the big stuff.

Ive always considered our engineers a little bit of cold feet for not progressing towards say 1000 hp and 2000 torque.

All the dispatchers and customers scream are they here yet? Running late? etc. Well. Let's beef em up. If you are going to gag at 65 or whatever then let's beef them up to run upgrade at 65.

Drive the newer trucks though, and it seems that Cummins advertises more power, and delivers real world less power than they used to.
And then again when its a Cat, around this area 90% are turned up.
Trust me unless some dialed it back down after i sold it, your truck was making way more than stock power.

She was pretty tired when I got it. Almost more smoke out the blowby pipe than the stacks lol.

You didn't happen to have put a new transmission in that truck when you had it? I had a member on here run the truck S/N and it came from factory with a lower torque rated 15 speed than what it has now. Pretty sure the engine is its original though. I searched up the engine S/N on my lunch break the other day and it was originally sold to Canadian Kenworth in Burnaby in either late 1979 or early 1980. Can't remember the exact date off hand.

If you ever get the chance to drive a new Mack with the 500/1850 do so, you will be extremely impressed with how they pull a steep hill.
I twisted the input shaft right out of it...bought an autowrecker 15 from a crashed truck with only about 100k kms on it, and spent the weekend changing it in my driveway with a buddy so it was ready for work Monday morning. The front diff got rebuilt that same winter it was getting a little noisy. So if the diff overhaul looks like it was done by a truck driver in his driveway, not a pro in a shop, that would be why lol.
I did my own wrenching to save money, and my mechanical skills at age 21, 22, 23, 24 etc were not perfect, but I always got her up and running...never missed a day I was supposed to haul in the entire time I owned it. The driving lights in the bumper were wired by me to, and the backups on the headache rack while I was learning how to wire.
My apologies man...it was my first truck...I learned a lot wrenching on the old girl in my driveway. I had a couple of tool boxes, and a gravel driveway, but got a lot done. A few shakey welds you may see were my handy work to...my welding is a lot better now at 52 than it was when I was 22 and had a cheap Acklands buzz box and didn't even know what rod to use so just used the same thing for every job.
I am all self taught Bruce, never been to a truck driving school or mechanical school.

I can tell you it lived in Rossland BC before I owned it...and apparently had a low speed flop on its side when nearly new. The AC on the roof was always in need of repair...so i finally gave up and just drove with the windows down.

I suspected the transmission was not original to the truck when I pulled it out. Transmission data plate indicated it was an RTX but the top cover was an RTO.

That flop happened in '84. I pulled the claims history on it for ####s 'n giggles when I found a tin plate riveted to the roof cap, behind the driver's side speaker. I also found some bondo around the upper left stack bracket when I started rough sanding the cab.

Knowing the low mileage logging trucks get vs OTR trucks, the fact the next owner only used it to haul water 3 days a week locally for 3 or 4 years I am not at all suprised at how good that transmission looked inside.

Did you ever rebuild the engine? The head doesn't look original but I have serious doubts the last guy ever sunk a nickle more than he had to into it. Odometer was disconnected but read 7,xxx miles. Definitely rolled over once I'd say.
