    I never crashed her thankfully.
I called the KW dealer I bought it from and got some specs. Read a library book from the Nelson library on how to overhaul a diff. Took it apart, measured and checked it out...put it back together and then ordered parts. When the parts arrived I took it apart again and rebuilt it, put it back together and it ran quietly and solid still the day I sold it. I spent hours in that library reading books on how to repair stuff. I even read books on how to weld...then bought a used buzz box and just kept trying. I'm not a half bad welder now...had many diffs, trannies and engines apart. Not too bad at rebuilding them if I may say so myself. My engines, diffs, and trannies hold up really well after I overhaul them. This very truck we are in today my trainee and I, this engine was rebuilt by my own hands around 7 or 8 years ago....still purrs like a good kitty. This 13 speed my mechanics went through it for me when this truck was overhauled...i did both diffs in this particular truck myself, still solid. We are rolling on 8 axles today, in an old school truck, 1995 KW W900 with 3406E and 13 speed with tandems, pulling a tandem jeep and tri axle knight beaver tail lowbed.
Just always a little proud when many years later the stuff I rebuilt is still holding together good is all. I hate doing transmissions though. And my favorite manual is still the 13 speeds...only thing better is the Mshift automatic lol
Yes I am old old old guys...and proudly been at it for 34 years.

I did some fairly long hauls for a logging truck and it was over 1.5 million when i sold it but I can't really remember what it was sorry.
Third year I had it think it was ...I did the Martin version of an inframe in my driveway during spring break up. It desperately needed pistons and liners. About half way through I realized that I was a bit in over my head, got some friends over and we took it out of the truck.
.threw it in a friends pickup and drove it to castlegar to a shop. I annoyed the poor mechanic for a few days while he rebuilt it with me helping ( hindering) him. Took it back home and put it back in the truck. You would think missing a crank, rods, pistons, exhaust, heads etc it would be easy for 8 strong young guys to get it out of there....nope it was a fight. Now fully assembled and home, i hired a guy with a little hiab on his 5 ton flat deck to lift it back in. I am no professional Caterpillar mechanic Bruce...did my best. It was i want to say around 1.2 million when I rebuilt it. Please don't quote me on any of this, that is a long long time ago.

You did good with it. Everything I took apart looked to be assembled properly. The engine had so many oil leaks from sitting it was easier to just yank it and do it on the shop floor. I hired the local welder with his 5 ton picker to pull it. Plus I didn't have an engine stand so he fabbed one up out of the two leftover pieces of frame rail from the rear cutoff I bought. Originally I bought a 40k tandem cutoff on AG100 air ride from a guy near Vancouver. Turns out the housings were rotten but still scored a good air slide 5th wheel and 3 good crossmembers so I still came out ahead.

Been a long time since I saw the old girl. Honestly when I found out that you had her, and were going to restore the old girl, i shed a tear...very emotional for me I always wondered what happened to my first truck.
I really tried my best to keep her maintained.

I picked up a load of cedar lumber from Jim’s Poles with a super B flat deck there just south of Rossland in the winter.
Had to put on all my tire chains on the truck, plus they pushed me out with a front end loader to get out of his yard onto the highway.
    Nice hills around there.

If you ever get the chance to drive a new Mack with the 500/1850 do so, you will be extremely impressed with how they pull a steep hill.

When it is done, maybe you'll let me fly up, and drive it for 15 minutes and reminisce.
