I have a 6ts 3406E that has about 550k on a cat short block. It had about 300k on it when I bought it. My question is what is a common oil press reading?? I think it used to stay closer to 55psi now it ranges from 40-55psi depending on my road speed, engine oil temp and if the turbo is spooled up or not. With hot oil at approx 58mph its usually 42 or so but 65mph or faster it might be 50-55. If Im not working it it stays 50 plus but it might read as low as 40 when its been pulling for all day at 55mph or so. It just seems like it used to be higher and I hope the bearings aren't heading south. I had a boost harness on it for a few months but took it off because the fear of too much soot in oil.

Mine is a 1LW and has roughly 370k on a CAT overhaul. I go down the road with 70 psi oil pressure # 1600 rpm with everything at operating temp. It idles # 40 psi hot. I'm using the Mobil Delvac oil. I used to run the Lucas in it but since its over $30 a gallon now, I never put it in anymore. I asked about using Lucas at the Cat dealer up in Denver and they don't recommend any additives.

My c-15 is about to hit 300k and the oil pressure is around 60psi under full throttle and 30 at idle (hmm, better check the level in the morning.) 40-55 just cruising on the interstate. I've driven 4 other cats that were about the same way if I remember right. It has some wear on it but I don't think it's a problem (yet.) Might ask a few mechanics and keep an eye on it though.

get an oil sample done that will tell you wear yours sounds lower than normal probably needs rods and main bearings usually can be done in one day under $1000

i bought my truck with 6ts 3406e in it three years from now, engine had 350k, oil pressure always 45 psi at 1600 rpm. cat dealer said it is ok as far as it stays at the same level. it is over 600k now and it is 45 psi at cruising.

possible the seals on the oil pump r going but that pressure is ok

Thanks for the reply's guys....... Im going to do a couple oil samples the next oil changes. I have had pretty good luck with this motor the last couple years it is a 500/1650 with fuel temp harness and 5232 codes I recently added (pulls about the same as a factory 550)and I get between 5.5-6mpg most of the time wich is pretty good for a bull rack.

There are no seals in the oil pump! There are end plates and bushings that wear along with mains and rod bearing that would cause 10 pound oil loss.Check your oil pressure gauge first with a known good gauge. The milage you posted is due for a bearing roll in.Check oil pump and check to see if you have the correct oilers while you have the oil pan down. You could also check oil pressure at the front cover then check it at the filer base and compare readings.

Anyone have the torque specs for the pan, oil pump, rod and main bolts on a 1998 6TS 3406E?

Pan and oil pump bolts - 55 ± 10 N·m (40 ± 7 lb ft)
Rod bolts- 90 ± 8 N·m (65 ± 6 lb ft) plus 90 ± 5 degrees (1/4 turn)
Main bolts- 260 ± 14 N·m (190 ± 10 lb ft) plus 120 ± 5 degrees (2 flats)W903B Thanks this.
