Utah Highway Patrol Troopers say a Dodge Durango traveling east near the Salt Lake County Tooele County line crossed through the center median and slammed head-on into a Fed-X semi truck.
Both vehicles burst into flames. The 3-cab semi was loaded with ammunition, which started to go off as the fire spread.
"The big problem right now is the ammunition is still going off," said Nigbur, "it's still pretty hot."
Crews were able to stop the fire from spreading to the second and third cabs.
The person driving the Durango died on scene. Officials are unsure of the person is male or female, due to the extend of damage from the crash and the subsequent fire.
The semi truck driver was flown to the hospital in critical condition.
Officials say the SUV was cut off by another vehicle, possibly a white pick-up truck, which fled from the scene.
The crash shut down both directions of the Interstate.
Officials have been turning cars around. Troopers are asking drivers to avoid I80 if they can or use an alternate route through Utah County.
