Ok, so I bought a 2000 Pete 379 with a 2ws in it minus all bolt on accessories, so just rocker boxes, head, and block with all internals. Supposedly it had an inframe done and only has 65k on it before it was parked and started getting robbed of parts. The head is bad so it needs to be rebuilt anyways.
Here is my dilemma, I have wanted a complete 99 6NZ and been looking at them to drop one in it and been back and forth over that or rebuild the 2ws and purchase new all the bolt on ####.
Well, this morning I found a thread on here from Jan. 2018 about turning a 14.6 into a 15.2 and @superhauler and @spsauerland posted the internals needed. So now I REALLY dont know what to do lol.
Besides the obvious displacement difference in the 3406E and C15, I know the 6NZ has better orings/gaskets for sealing and correcting the oil leaks and also has straight cut gears but thats really it.
Ugh, what would you do?
Help decide which Cat motor..

I vote go for the 6NZ. Don't think you can go wrong with it. put on a big turbo, Polish and ported manifold, and a few other add ons along with sweet tune and that B***h will ROCK.
Trucker186 and WREN Thank this. -
I know there are people here who will disagree with me, but according to the latest guidance from the FMCSA the eld exemption goes on model year, not manufacture year. 6nz is a 2000 my engine. The Cat guides say so. It has been shared here, but not having a Cat, I didn't save it.
Second, some Cat guys have said the 2ws is a better engine. Everybody thinks of the 6nz as being the holy grail of Cat engines, but really they are the vest factory setup of C15, ie egr and DPF exempt, and if you accept it is the manufacture date, the only C15 that is ELD exempt.
Finally, very few 6nz were manufactured in 1999. It's funny how 4,000 turned into every 6nz being manufactured in 1999!Oxbow Thanks this. -
Build that 2ws, they're just as good as a 6nz and you already own it.haycarter, Cattleman84, Diesel Dave and 3 others Thank this.

I ended up buying a dump truck with a 6NZ built 12/23/1999. Pure luck as I don't really care about ELD as it relates to engine year because we are exempt anyway due to less than 8 days in 30 needing logs. It is a good engine set stock @ 475 (plenty for a 10 wheeler), but I don't know that I would dump a 2WS for it.shogun, WREN, BoxCarKidd and 2 others Thank this.

If you've got money to burn, then go and get the 6NZ, but you've got a complete motor ready to work and make money. Might as well work it and make money and get the 6NZ later in a second truck.
Both are million+ mile motors that everyone wants. And if you want it ELD-exempt, you're going to pay a massive premium for the 6NZ. -
Not even close to complete. Only thing there is block (with internals), head, and rocker boxes. Everything else under the hood is gone.
-
Unless you can find a 6nz complete with everything for cheap you'd be money ahead sticking with the 2ws, that's just my experience though and assuming you're paying somebody else to do the biggest part of the work.
-
Ah I see, but that's more motor than that 6NZ you have. And you'll spend more to get a complete 6NZ than to complete your 2WS. But that's just my two cents. And they're Canadian cents, so they aren't worth as much, lol.Oxbow, haycarter, Cat sdp and 1 other person Thank this.
