But if the power comes from better efficiency it might make the engine last longer. For example advanced timing=lower EGT=longer lasting engine. Maybe.

What about since the HP is higher the percentage of time the engine is working to it's max is reduced?
-
600 HP used 79% is 474 HP......
800 HP used .59375% is 475 HP
so yup, i would say your correct!Last edited: Jun 13, 2009

PDI told me that the 725HP program was about 550 at 1350. If I recall correctly the 475/1650 factory program I'm running is about 370 at the same RPM. Getting back the 8 or so degrees of lost timing is a relief on the engine for sure. It has to be more efficient and easier on the engine, driven right. Now, the tranny and clutch......
PaulE Thanks this. -
No point having more horsepower if you dont use it, I'm not saying a high horse engine cant give an acceptable life to overhaul but generally (not always) adding power will reduce engine life. I have seen many 475hp 5EK's reach 30000hrs before being overhauled but very few 550hps make it that far.
Lenny, I think improving efficincy, add timing, lower egts, etc. may be the best way to make power and keep it reliable but there is always going to be increased wear as long as you use that extra power.
As an example, in a C15 no matter what method you use to increase power you have to raise average cylinder pressure, Cat uses keystone compression rings which use combustion pressure to force the ring against the bore for a better seal, if you increase average cylinder pressure then you force the ring against the bore harder/for longer each stroke meaning it will wear faster. Many other components will be the same, they wont fail, they just wear out faster. -
I am hoping to be able to do an Ecm upgrade on my 04 accert and remove the IVA's this summer but am wondering if i should with this engine already having 730k on it??

paul e do you ever leave anything alone
spring is already back to 85 psi

are you saying things should be left stock?? Cmon Harry, you know my brain cant process that kind thinking. thats crazy talk. -
It's hard to say if negative or positive effect is greater, very difficult to do a reliable test. The company I am working for have had many custom programmed engines and none of them have failed before they are sold. The last truck I drove had 1.2Mkm when it was sold and it's still doing regular Spain trips without engine overhaul by the new owner. But it was not extreme, 420 to maybe 520 with stock hardware.
