I hate the 10 speeds. Get me a 13 double under or a mack 15 stack three and I can halt the earth rotation.
The problem with 10 speeds is that when I am in 5th high and have to split into high range and cross the whole box into what I consider granny hole in 6th it takes a minute. And sometimes I scratch. Lightly.FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -
This is why I couldnt be a trainer... Someone that cant catch a gear on a down grade and me in the right seat... Yeah not going to happen. To those of you that do train... Well my hat is off to ya.FlaSwampRat and x1Heavy Thank this.

Ive always prefered 18 speed... But I did drive a 1974 Mack 14 yard dump truck that someone had put a Super 10 in... That was a fun truck to drive.FlaSwampRat and x1Heavy Thank this.

Too much.
You described it well, but I hate trucks that buck like that. If you are in first and she throws a fit like that, I recommend a higher gear, due to being empty, light load etc.
Also I am clearing very old ancient cobwebs here thinking more on that rascal.
IF you are shifting or trying to get moving and she does that "Chakachakachaka" it's trying to tell you what are you doing? you wanna move out or not? You cannot be shifting three gears betwee say 7 mph to 15. It doesnt work that way. The availible mechanical advantage as shown by ratios in the low end box is massive. It does not take much.
However if you find yourself vertical loaded 80000 seeing sky, you will appreciate those gears.
DO NOT whatever you do come out of gear until you straighten out from your turn. The pressure in mid turn on your 5th wheel will stall you then snarl traffic in both directions.FlaSwampRat, TugHillRider and 88228822 Thank this. -
you will miss gears, accept it as part of learning and make sure you know what gear to go to for recovery
also, the splitter only works (switches) in neutral. you can flip it early but it doesn't change until you go into neutralstwik, FlaSwampRat, x1Heavy and 1 other person Thank this. -
Yeah I didn’t give it any fuel. Was stopped. Popped it in first and slowly took foot off of clutch. Of course these yard tractors are old and beat up because not many people get in the and know how to drive lolFlaSwampRat and x1Heavy Thank this.

My dad drove 10 speed for years delivering crates of milk to stores. Said once you get used to it, you won’t even need to double clutch.FlaSwampRat and x1Heavy Thank this.

5 gallon buckets in some cases. We had a term for that decades ago. But I don't want to offend our tender newbie.FlaSwampRat Thanks this.
