FEMA to test Emergency Alert System Wednesday

 

4 and 16 channels here in Arkansas executed a green continential warning drill. Other local channels ignored it because we are in storm warnings rest of today.

RT on Dish got it as well. I treat them as primary entry for problems requiring EAS. All other channels on dish rolled on normally.

It's not a perfect drill. Cell phone stayed quiet because we are subsidized and they don't get alerts unless we signed up for example that issued by reverse 911 or local police over the cell.

 

Disability or income levels. recertify after summer time annually. Its essentially free, phone is crappy about 20 dollars retail value is what I paid for it.

To me its text only, it can do emergency internet and can do live map in real time down to inches. It knows what room of a hospital I am in for cripes...

These phones usually do not respond to FEMA or White House directed EAS warnings. You will know nothing until after the disaster is finished.

In the past with trucking and after that we bought nothing but the best in cell and frankly enough was enough. We are still running on two flip phones I paid 600 to ATT for outright for the phones about 15 years ago. One is good for a spare.

ATT wants 50 dollars for a flip phone and then another 50 a month for services that I consider limited. No thanks.

The Government Phone program dates to the late Reagan Era. In those days only the military, some Law and mostly wall street bankers had cells. The rest of us made do with rotary or touch tone if we were lucky. I think Maryland charged 12.00 a month to keep number and dial tone local and then long distance was tolled as fractions of a minute. We had a rotary on hand until the phone company replaced the very copper switches and wires out of their exchange and went digital about 1983. Arkansas deployed digital about 84 in Eldorado.

Parts of Alabama are probably still copper per contracted law until the elderly die off in a generation, then replaced with cell and digital lines.

There is one more thought. 5G is being deployed quietly. At some point when it reaches enough density to provide and cover every human on earth with radio waves for service, you might as well dispose of the entire phone system and celluar services then. Poof. Obsolete they say.

 

I don't consider myself in need of this or that. I have not made a voice call in 12 years in or out. I use relay here on the computer for very important calls out. Only. In the 16 or so years I maintained cell service primarily for trucking I might have had 10 calls on it the whole time on the road. Then endured 80 dollar monthly billing that kept going up going up going up drip drip drip.

One day I got angry, lost my temper inside the store and screamed this is BS. The staff laughed. One came up and introduced me to Uncle Sam. Would i be pleased to have this?

16 to 18 thousand spent in my lifetime to seriously maintain a cell phone by the month over about 17 years and Dear Uncle Sam is pleased to carry on my communications. Mostly Text.
