I was leased to Darling's Keyline Freight in the 1970s. I hooked to a trailer pre-loaded with auto parts by Hare Cartage in Detroit, going to Milwaukee. It came with a large manila envelope of freight bills totaling about 35,000 lbs, so there was no need to scale it. I was stopped at the Grass Lake scale, overweight on the rear tandems. Sliding the tandems all the way to the rear did not make much difference. The officer wrote information about the load and my driver's license on a scratch pad. I asked whether I was getting a ticket. He said, "Oh, no. We can't write a ticket for this." He let me go. I assume that he would use the information to get free lunch the next time our safety man, "Woody" Woodson stopped at the scale. I stopped at our Chicago terminal and unloaded two Gaylord boxes of gears from the tailgate that had no bills in the manila envelope. Then I felt confident crossing the scales at the Wisconsin state line. The boxes of gears became the Chicago terminal manager's problem..

they were open many times when i ran from MA to NJ and back about 12-1:AM nightly. the scales in waterford were hardly open late at night northbound, south bound, oh yeah, but hit or miss.

the scales on 84 (near danbury??) hit or miss as well after midnight.

A positive that I was not there to see was at woodward Ok. the story went that a guy pulled in with a dozer on, and didn't cross the scales, because it would hit the building. The scale house there was only a 10x10 or maybe 12, small anyway.
the scale man insisted he cross the scales, so finally did, catching the corner of the building and turning it around some on it's foundation.
I didn't see it, but did see it afterwards, and as far as I know they never reopened it. lol

Another I considered a positive, at least for a while, was coming in to Alaska, I went by the scale at TOK, it was closed and some construction equipment was in the lot. I delivered in Anchorage and came back out the next day. The scale house was now a pile of rubble, they had dozed it down.

But then they built a supercoop, so no happy ending. lol

My first day driving with my new Class A. On Interstate going into SD from Mn. Construction signs all over the median....watching for the speed limit signs to drop from 60 mpg down to 45 mph. Only thing I see is a trooper pull in behind me, then replaced by a dot car.

The dot guy told me I had missed a port of entry. I did not recognize that term....then he says I missed a weigh station....oh crap. I was no where close to being over weight, with a half tanker of milk. I just didnt see the TWO signs, I was that focused on the speed limit dropping to 45 mph in the construction zone, which it never did.

So we go back to his car, so he can review my log book. He said I had to log the prior 7 days of being off duty, which I knew from cdl school, but had forgotten to do.

So I am thinking the fines for these two violations could be as much as my pay for trip.

But the SD DOT officer let me off with a written warning for both violations...I can never thank him enough for that.

That scale is open all the time anymore. Nights n weekends too.
Best friendly cop story I have is I got off n was skipping that scale, came under the bridge by bimbo bakeries and a local Greenwich cop was setting right there I. That little pull off on Hamilton on the right coming up the hill. Didn’t even pull out behind me. Gave me the long look while I came up on him n gave a half wave when I was in front of him.
