2000 Volvo VNL Instrument Cluster Problems

    My instrument cluster have 8 gauges the 2 of the air tanks and fith wheel weight works perfectly but Water temp, Oil pressure, Speed and RPM sometimes they work sometimes they’re dead like right now it could stay for days not working and all of sudden they start working again!!

    Right Now they are dead i go into settings and I do the gauge test(self test in progress) they work so i assume is not the motor of the gauges failing.

    Any ideas what’s wrong here??
    This is driving me crazy!!

    Overtime the electrical contacts inside get loose and have bad connection. Look up on eBay Volvo Vnl cluster repair, that guy takes the cluster apart and resolders everything in there

    The problem most likely not an instrument cluster. Water, oil pressure, RPM, speed sensor connected to the Engine Computer Module. From ECM information sent to instrument cluster and VECU. Check connection between ECM and cab.

    I had a 2000 Volvo VNL and had issues with the Speedometer and other instruments not working from time to time. I lived with it until i sold the truck. Changing the instrument cluster to a different one will show different mileage. That might be good or bad depending on your original miles. My mechanic at the time told me the problem was with in instrument cluster and not the sensors since we replaced the speed sensor with no affect.

    Do you mean the cables coming out of the ECM to the inside the cab or inside the cab behind the cluster?

    I know what u mean, i don’t mind the difference in mileage if is not to much difference right now i got 1.600 miles i can work with something around that but I cannot live with not knowing the oil pressure or the temp when the truck is running.

    My instrument cluster works from time to time too and when i self test the gauges in settings they all work so im trying to figure out if is the cluster that is defective before buying another one because they’re expensive as hell.

    Yes. First place to look is pass thru connector on the firewall. Running with broken or inaccurate odometer can give you big troubles in case you have IFTA or IRP audit. If you change odometer you should write document about on this date odometer was changed with old readings xxxxxxxx to new readings yyyyyyyy. Signature, date. Good to have this document from the shop or dealer.

    Save the hassle and buy a scan guage. It has water temp, rpm, speed, boost, mpg, and many more. Boost and egts I run on seperate guages I installed to the right of the engine brake switches, I have the same issue. Scan guage only cost me 150$. Connects to obd port and reads of ecm. Mounted it right on top of dash. It's a low profile and right un my eye sight!

    There is a guy in Ohio sells a cluster brand new for 3500! Volvo dealer has them as well for 4800! I laughed my ### off at them
