I came to this thread to learn but I couldn’t resist.

Dealing with the BS these days? I dont know man i really think we are super truckers for not going postal.

    Ok back on topic.

Chain is only as strong as its weakest link. That should be in play when trying to figure out what can and cant be towed or hauled.

I would call the cop a lair on the claim that it can haul 20k because it has four tires, the axle rating matters as does other things. You take the least amount of weight as the limit, so if your tires can hold 20k, but the axle has a limit of 10k, then the max is 10k.

I'm in total agreement with your statement. It goes for all the components involved. Tires, axles, gooseneck ball or mini 5th wheel, coupler, & trailer rating..

    I will say this..
I think how 1 tons gets away with a overloaded drive is because "most" scale bears have been taught 12k steer, 20k single, 34k tandem, 80k gross.. They have little to no knowledge of pickups & just how much lower their axle capacities actually are..

This morning, I drove by a 1 ton pickup with a 40' gooseneck trailer. He was on the side of the freeway with a very big problem. His gooseneck broke off from trailer but still attached to pickup truck. A few feet behind the truck was the trailer with 2 cars leaning on it side with missing gooseneck. I am surprised the trailer didnt fly off and roll over causing injuries. The guy must be an owner operator because he looked very stressed and his posture was grimm.

Yep, just cause you can do something, doesn’t mean you should. Respect the weight, or you might find the price to large to pay.

Couple weeks back there was a union pacific semi pulling some type of trailer. I think it was a retractable trailer. The back half let go from the front half.

Actually the cops I know here in Michigan are very knowledgeable about pickups and capacity.

With that said I really really wish people would stop using 1 ton to describe a pickup, my new pickup has a high capacity exceeding one ton. All of those terms went out with the 90's.
