My biggest question was who fuels the truck? Obviously there tons other things that go with all of that. Automating what we already have isnt the answer. But a purpose built fully autonomous vehicle when the time comes could be. Not that I'm advocating myself out of a job but its gonna happen one day like it or not.Crusader66, Lostkeys, cke and 6 others Thank this. -
Which manufacturer will make this smart truck?
Freightliner with its brake chamber recalls and steering shaft that comes loose? Along with clutches that don’t disengage their transmissions increasing accident likelihood.
International with their rupturing fuel lines that can lead to a potential fire, and the same transmission issues?
How about Volvo with their fifth wheel recalls because the fifth wheel jaws may open on their own? Volvo also had transmission issues. In fact, any manufacturer with that fifth wheel is under recall. (2 people seriously injured this week by a dislodged trailer in Idaho I believe)
Peterbilt’s got some electrical recalls along with parking brake recalls and transmission recalls.
Mack has a LCM recall, who needs lights on a truck and trailer anyways?
All these recalls are 2018 and newer. Most of these manufacturers source parts from the same companies. Trucking utopia still may be a few months away.BigBob410, Crusader66, cke and 14 others Thank this. -
Well I was not specifying a particular trailer. Just a few jobs drivers do. But actually you would be amazed by the equipment and steel that moves on van trailers. I have done it and pulled them with chain pop ups in the floor.
It's not always dry goods with a load bar across it.BigBob410, Crusader66, Lostkeys and 9 others Thank this. -
Not the shipper or receiver, hell them lazy SOB's hand you a seal, then tell you to cut it off. So when I get one that's a prick I tell them "JMT company policy is that we can not remove seal and risk termination". They get there fat rear waddled out to trailer and do it most the time. I get a chuckle to myself and carry on.
It will employ low wage jobs to fuel, open doors, crank landing gear. And are unmployment rate will be low, just like now. But with sheet wage jobs.
Second thing is technology to open doors, lower landing gear, secure loades all add weight. We will use humans for many years were it's cheaper than designing machinery. We are consumables. Tell me why a engineered machine can make the product but still has human interaction to remove product from assemble line? The human is still cheaper than the machine is to replace them for now.BigBob410, Crusader66, SL3406 and 10 others Thank this. -
Maybe I should go back to towing, this could be a sweet deal.Nostalgic, BigBob410, Crusader66 and 9 others Thank this. -

You guys are asking questions that are related to what is available NOW. Autonomous trucks are going to likely be hybrid or electric, use disc brakes, have dedicated lanes etc.
Speaking of securement, IMHO these types of loads will be palletized by the shipper in standard sizes like aircargo or containers. The automated shipping won't replace truks and trucking for other than standard loads. The reality is, 80+ % of all truck freight moves in vans, tanks, or hoppers. The odd stuff will still have a need for human insight at least for a while?

Moose, I think netflicks or YouTube, not youporn. Watch the "The Great Hack" I think it was. All I'm gonna say I don't care what crooked party you claim to trust. It is informative to everyone. It's never been about race, it's all about money. Never forget that.Zeviander, Crusader66, Feedman and 5 others Thank this. -
Well they will have to train Timmy's son better on a loading dock cause to rely on them brainless wonder to show up is a stretch. I still find shipers that do not know their own liability in loading their own product. Or forgot to band it to a pallet. Them shippers will need a huge savings in the transportation in order to pay and train the loaders and take on the responsibility. They pretty much have that figured out now. They have low wage guys perform half azzed jobs and the liability is not on them, it's on the truckers. It's a full swing kinda thing. No one wants liability, but someone will get it.
Why does Amazon still have people pulling packages and not robots? They will tell you for control. That may be part of it. But the human is still cheaper than the compairible machine for now.
The idea of replacing drivers may or will happen. Most of us will not see it for a long time still.Last edited: Aug 16, 2019
