My wife and I are looking to buy our first truck and we are heavily looking at 2 trucks and we want to get some opinions. Below I'll just list out the differences. Both are just under 500k miles.
2014 VNL 670
- $2K more
- 100K Mile Warranty
- I-Shift Trans
- Interior is decent but could use a different cabinet with an actual door on it.
- Front axle is rated at 12k lbs (seems low to me, but I've read that 670's are lighter so maybe it'll even out? I mostly drive light loads but occasionally pull up to 44k-45k)
- We'd have only a couple extra thousand from the loan once taxes insurance and fuel for a couple weeks is accounted for.
2013 VNL 780
- $2k less than the 670
- No Warranty
- 10 Speed Eaton (I tested on a stick but haven't driven one in the mountains yet)
- Unsure on front axle weight, waiting on an email back from the dealer.
- Interior is top of the line
- We'd have 2 extra thousand on top of what we'd have vs the 670 afterwards.
I'm currently at a company that I could pull in $15k a month and have expenses of $8k before paying myself and accounting for putting away money for tires and maintenance, so I could still squirrel away 3k-4k a month in addition to what I'm putting away for maintenance and tires. I'm mostly unsure of which to go with for two reasons though.
The 670's warranty is very tempting as it's covering the engine, transmission and diffs for 100k miles but the front axle weight bothers me.
The 780 is for sure a nicer truck but it wouldn't come with a warranty and us just starting out I feel like it'd be nice to have that safety net. As for front axle weight I'd be much happier if it was 13.2k on the 780 but I've yet to hear back from the dealer.

12k is the standard rating for most trucks. Nothing there to worry about. I would buy the 2014 ... only 2k difference and comes with a warranty. What should worry you is no warranty on the def system. That's where the real troubles and big money repairs are. If start up money is a problem find a less expensive truck or wait until you get some more saved. A truck will leave you broke in a real hurry if you haven't prepared for it.
FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -
I'm guessing you'd say go all in on the non DEF and DPF truck? -
That would be my choice. Just be aware of the risks and potential problems that come with buying a modified truck.

99% of the trucks on the road have a 12000 pound axle, even some heavy haul trucks.
I would buy the best truck my money would buy and the one speced best for my intended use.
How well are you versed in mechanicals of a truck, have you had any of them tested.
I am not sure why everybody is hung up on volvos, from what I have been hearing, it is almost impossible to get anyone but a volvo dealer to work on one, so I would not even think about the one that has everything deleted, at any price.
I do not know who that warranty is through, but some are not what they are cracked up to be.Newto Trucking, Cabinover101 and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
I am curious, what kind of price does a 500,000 mile 2013 or 4 bring these days. I am thinking that if one of those Ishift trannies goes out in another year or two, it cost as much as the truck is worth, from what I have been hearing on the cost of them.
I also hear they are a good tranny, but everything can and eventually does break.Cabinover101 and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
15k -8k = 7k... here is where I have a problem.. “Paying myself” you need to figure at least $6,500 for your monthly, personal income because that amount is what you should be making as a company driver..
To me your monthly truck expenses are way to high and you’d end up just working for the truck..
As far as the truck goes..a 670 interior is way too small. I drove a 2016, 670 for almost 2 years. If your teaming with your wife or if she will be on the road with you for any length of time I’d pass on the 670.ridgerunner77, Cabinover101 and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
I have no clue who the warranty is though, I'm planning on asking monday.Cabinover101 and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
That one that has been deleted, if you have to have it worked on, and you eventually will, it is a good chance they will have to put it back to original before they will even diagnose your truck, to the tune of several thousand dollars.
Cabinover101, FlaSwampRat, Dino soar and 1 other person Thank this.
