Does working as a contractor imply working under your own authority? I was offered an 8 day job as a contractor. They say the job is easy 2 mile back and forth A to B at night for 8 days driving a pump truck. I have disclosed to them I have no experience and they say no problem. A pumping specialist will be in truck with me operating the pump controls etc.

Not under your authority. Probably a 1099 job.

Thank you. Can you just hop into a hundred thousand dollar vehicle as a 1099 and not have to worry about insurance, liability etc? I don't how the liability issues work out. Lets say you rip the bumper off the truck, do they go after you for it? What about hit another car and it is your fault? Then what. If you do a 1099 do they need to show you proof that they have insured you and protected you from liability?

From what I understand a 1099 job is the same exact thing as being a company guy except you have 0 benefits, have to pay your own taxes, and they are generally problematic. I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong but that's what I've come to see them as.

The way a 1099 works around here is you furnish your own workmans comp. You have to have a business license too.
Then you lease the truck, and lease it too the carrrier, and the carrier, you take ut your pay and pay the owner his cut.

    Labrador and FlaSwampRat Thank this.

Ok let’s really be serious here. NO your not under your own Authority did you file such paperwork? Did you wait for approval? Do you have the extra insurance? F No. who are you kidding? These kind of posts drive me nuts. 2 miles how much are you getting paid for your power only move? What does wait time pay? Sweet Jesus.

How did you come up with power only?
I took his question as did he need his own authority to take the job, not hat he was going to get authority.
This sounds more or less like they are just going to use him temporarily and pay him under the table.

    Labrador and FlaSwampRat Thank this.

Yea, 1099 here just means you are getting paid under the table. I don't know if that's the legal way it works but that's what people do.

No I did not do any of that. Was just asking if that was required. Apparently not. I imagine 1099 is ok if you are paid enough.

    FlaSwampRat Thanks this.
