My 2012 Prostar came with eaton 10 speed and solo automatic clutch.
I'm looking for a clutch replacement and due to complicity and premature failure of auto-adjustment components I will be going with simplicity of manual adjustable clutch this time around.
Now, my question is more about replacing rear main seal on Maxxforce 13. Truck has 265K on it and still fairly dry in that area but as a preventive maintenance I'd like to change it since I'll be in there. I have two are of concern as I never done it on Maxxforce before
#1. Does this job require any special tools (maxxforce oriented, especially seal installation tool)
#2. Any advice on install procedure would be greatly appreciated
Clutch replacement, possibly rear main seal

Unfortunately I don't have a tool nor have an idea where I could get it from so because of that I will go with the word of wisdom and leave it alone as suggested. Thank you Heavyd,
Case closed.Heavyd Thanks this. -
Isn’t a common rule to replace the rear main period whenever the transmission and clutch are out ? I have had three clutches replace through my life of trucking, and have replaced the rear main regardless if it was dry. Cheap extra insurance if you asked me, but what do I know, I’m just a driver, O/O to say the least.

Same here, if the tranny is out replace the rear main seal.
As Murphy’s Law would have it, couple hundred miles down the road the rear main seal would go out.boneebone and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
You sure can, but he doesn't have the proper tooling to replace that seal. That is the point I was making.
AModelCat, QUALITYTRUCK and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
I know nothing about those engines.
But anytime I will take a transmission out I would want to put a new seal in.
Again, I don't know anything about those particular engines, but if you are experienced at putting seals and you probably do not need the tool.
If you are not experienced in putting seals in, then you either should let it go or just buy the seal installer.
Would you feel better about buying the seal installer and not having to pull the transmission out again, or would you feel better about not buying the seal installer and having to pull the transmission out again? -
I myself have always let the “drivetrain” professionals handle that kind of work. I prefer to pay them the first time and not twice for labor down the road. I real professional “tech”(as there called now)will tell you to replace the rear main since everything is out and probably R/R the motor mounts, oil cooler lines(they get brittle from hot and cold). Anyways...... spend the extra $$$$$ and get everything done right the first time. If you don’t have that reserve fund, your in the wrong business being an O/O. Just my .02
