A good friend of mine (not a truck driver by the way) asked me the other day why we call cops "smoky bears" and I told him I didn't know but I would do my best to get an answer and I quickly thought of this message board. So if anyone on here knows the history behind that please let us all know. Thanks
Why do we call them "smoky bears"?

Probably because alot of them wear the same style hat like the Smokey Bear on the Forest Fire Ads.
Texas-Nana Thanks this. -
Its the hat. SmokeyBear generally refers to the highway patrol.
You've seen it before. Disco lights behind you. Smokey gets out of the car and puts that famous hat on his head and tilts it foward and pulls the rear strap down, locking it in place so the wind doesnt take it off his head.
Locking this hat in places cuts the circulation off in the forehead. Instant headache. SmokeyBear is about to ruin someone's day. -

Years ago the Us Forest Service rescued a bear cub from a forest fire. They decided to get peoples attention to put their campfires out by using the bear dressed in a Forest Service uniform and they named the bear Smokey. There used to be posters, books, tv ads, pamphlets etc all with "Smokey the Bear" as the center piece. The Forest Service wore hats like many State Police agencies, hence, "Smokey the Bear' Have a great day and be safe.
