But he was smart enough identify the low ROI, average it across 6 weeks to be sure, and spill his entire picture here looking for sound advice, which he is getting.

How many of you would bare all your ignorance publically and take the scrutiny that comes with it, to improve?

This guy is gonna make it.

My 13 year old knows how to average how much she makes. This is 4th grade level math here. Congrats, he can do averaging.

He he will make it right up to the point his 600,000k mile truck breaks down . Then he has nothing to sell and will be worse off than selling now.
Plus, as he's proven to not be a good employeer by his pay rate. What makes me think he will help stranded driver get home when the truck breaks down?

And this is a "when the truck breaks down" scenario, not an "if the truck breaks down" scenario.

All you are doing is giving him what he wants to hear. He'll happily keep running rates lower until the truck breaks down then he will abandon the truck and strand the driver.

And before you say he may not, go read the bad company fourms for a few pages.....

How naive are you to think that he is gonna fold up shop and take a loss at your suggestion?

"hunny, ive decided to sell the truck today because 7 out of 10 anonymous internet competitors have told me its the best thing for us."

He has spent a lot of time and money getting to where he is now and will try to recoup it. He is gonna either run like he is now, undercutting rates and wages and helping to erode the market for another year or so until the truck dies, or he is gonna learn, improve and become a legitimate carrier holding out for profitable rates and paying fair wages.

You are right about one thing. People take the advice they want to hear and reject all else. "Quit now" is basically worthless advice since no one will ever take it. You're all quick to point out that he isnt smart enough to run a trucking company, isnt competent enough to improve his trucking company, but will suddenly get wise enough to listen to you and quit.

Its like telling a coyote to stop eating meat because eventually it causes cancer.

Hopefully he will make it, I hate to see folks fail.
The odds are against him, just from the perspective that what he wants to do is a hard game to make work and it doesn't really matter who you are, but it is also possible to overcome odds.
I Know a large percentage of first time OO's fail, and it usually has nothing to do with slow freight, or rates, they get the blame, but it is their business program that gets them, a lot of these guys learn from their first go around and come back in a couple of years with a better business program and make a go of it. If he gets his business program right, maintains his truck right keeps a decent driver on it, that can keep a truck going not just ride and guide, has some exceptionally good luck, he may make it work. If he expects to make a lot of money, with one truck and one driver, then his expectations are too high.

He's green and interested in making a go of it in a tough business that may be getting tougher.

I did the same type of calculations 3 times in the last 45 yrs and for me the numbers never showed a significantly better income versus a company driver for the work and responsibilities that came with it.
Alas it's not been that long ago where we only had books or first hand fellow o/o experiences and advice to build on, now of course....
