I discussed this with one of their recent former drivers, last night (he quit for family reasons - was very happy working there - wants to go back). Like most carriers, what you *can* make is not necessarily what you *will* make, especially to start.

The pay structure does not particularly incentivize hard running, probably because the nature of their business can really put the brakes on. But according to this driver, if you run safely, and plan to make the most of your time, then yes - he made $85,000 last year. If you just do the minimum, the daily pay still adds up nicely, but reality for most of their drivers is somewhere in the middle. You get to bank two days of home time per week, but home time isn't paid, so if you're all about the money, you may not want to take all of the home time that you have available.

There are three tiers of daily pay, and it takes three years to get to the top tier (which pays something like $185 per day). Mileage pay is paid on the truck, to both drivers - you don't just get paid for what you, personally, drive - and ranges from 7 to 14 cents per mile, based upon your license endorsements, credentials (DoD clearance, TWIC, Canada explosives, passport), and time with the company. They have had annual bonuses as well, but it didn't seem like these were guaranteed, consistent, or spelled out in advance. This particular driver said he got $6k, based upon $0.06 per mile for 100k miles, last year - but you probably shouldn't count on that many miles in your first year, or on any kind of annual bonus. Nice if it comes, but don't base your budget on it.

Honestly, the pay sounds low for the nature of the job, but people generally seem pretty happy with these guys, who have any history with them. There are always rare exceptions, but I'm looking hard at this place, as my next employer. I don't need to be a millionaire, but I would like to reactivate my DoD clearance, and use it for something - and honestly, I'm fine with a lot of downtime. I'm not a spring chicken, any more...

 

We've been with TSMT company almost a year.
This company has exceeded my expectations.
Yes, you haul HZ from Clean Harbors but to be fair TSMT HZ training is intense and they ask us to call everytime we pick up a HZ load to verify we have the correct placards. They are constantly reminding us to check for new permits or to call so they can fax them b4 you start your trip.
Anytime I have had any issue I have found someone to assist me.
Issues from route, revenue, discounts, customer, weather you name it they have been there.
Let me give you an example;
First time I went from from MA to VA directions on the Qualcomm were through George Washington Bridge...GPS said same. Ahh??? No, I do not want to cross that bridge...
I called dispatch, she guided me through different route and gave me numbers to call when I reached certain points.
In the year I've been here I've seen newer trailers the older ones are in excellent condition.
Trailers are DOT inspected every 6 mths.
More than 75% of their trucks are 2019 more are coming this year.
Back in OCT I emailed upper mgmt because the washer machine had had stop working in the Camden yard...washer and dryer were replaced with bigger and new ones.
Several of their locations have nice showers, nice laundry facilities, nice kitchen were we can cook, pet friendly...
TSMT is not a one size fit all.
In my case O/O my first 6 mths equal to $232k revenue to the truck this is after Plates, permits and office processing have already been deducted.
Oh! By the way...
TSMT pays all tolls.
O/O only pays $21. a mth for the device use.
If you are a driver that understands all loads are good loads as long as the revenue to the truck is in the positive let me tell you our trk run 83k mls and made 232k. Minus the fuel which was close to 28k.
Our first 2 mths we did mostly HZ/Clean Harbor loads and yes many weekends I sat at truck stop, hotel or other nice yards.
Canada loads are optional.

If you call a recruiter I suggest Kim, she will tell you like it is. TSMT has a strict hiring process therefore they will explain what is expected from you from the beginning.
If you are currently employed and have questions go to the office and speak to any upper mgmt. They will help you learn the TSMT process which by the way is nothing like any other.
In my 27yrs experience I can tell you TSMT is the top company I have worked for.

I and my wife are looking at leasing to tmst, but my wife is no winter driver, how will they respond if she says she is stopping? we have our authority and pull refer on the west coast. My truck grosses 28k per month average. The recruiter says that leasing there will make better income, is it true?

 

I realize this thread is from 2018, but as a second generation Tri-Stater I just have to say what @Whiteline64 said is completely unfair. Tri-State's equipment is constantly getting updated. The executive team, including our CEO and Executive Vice President(s), are phenomenal! They care about their Drivers and want the company to succeed. Tri-State is a 90 year old company - of course in 90 years we might garner a "bad review" from a disgruntled Driver ... But there is (and has always been) more good than "bad" from this company. Drivers who work at Tri-State are among the ELITE. I'd go so far to say that Tri-State is THE BEST company in the trucking industry. That's just my two cents. Hope potential Drivers don't get deterred by one misguided review.
