Hello, I am in no way a mechanical person. I am thinking about buying my first truck a
2015 VOLVO VNL64T670
Manufacturer VOLVO
Mileage 454,040
Engine Mfr Cummins
Engine Type ISX
Horsepower 450
Engine Brake yes
Transmission Manual Drive 6x4
Axle Front 13200
Axle Rear 38000
Ratio 3.36
Tire Size Doesnt say
Wheel Base 219
Wheels Aluminum
GVW 52000
Is This a good truck for fuel mileage, running as flat as I can but may need to take loads in mountain areas.
What would be a fair estimate for MPG, Reliability of this year, and are those axle weights normal?
ANY info you can give is really helpful. I appreciate all you offer as I am very new to this.
IF this is a terrible POS, what is honestly better, I am looking for cheap to run and make money with it. I dont need shiny and loud, just reliable and good MPG.

Doesn’t say which transmission other than a manual.
A lot of guys get around 7.2 mpg with that.
3.36 rear ratio would do close to 1300 rpm with 11R22.5 tires at 65 mphFlaSwampRat Thanks this. -
I have to wonder about those specs. I like a 6X4 , but you would never see one in a volvo, so they must have something else they are calling it.
I would also think it would have 40s for rears, instead of 38s
Up here that isx would have already have been rebuilt, but this country is hard on them, I don't know what kind of mileage they are getting on them down there.FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -

Pretty common fleet spec truck, ISX of that age and mileage you’d want to make sure it had the fuel pump rebuilt.
I’ve seen a fair few Volvo’s with 38klbs rears. -
A 6 and a 4, (whistles), and I thought those days were over,, Volvo? ,meh,, I suppose it's equivalent to like buying an old Schneider IH cabover years ago. It will work. Pete or KW, you'll be proud to own and you get resale when ,,oops, I mean, if you fail.

The truck is a 6x4 not a 6x2, it’s not saying it has a 6 and a 4 in it.

With that kind of mileage things really start to go south on them. You want someone who knows the ISX to take a look at it and to see what are the common problems of that particular year.
I have heard a lot of horror stories with people who own high mileage ISX, but I am not familiar with them.
I would look over the engine, drivetrain, and the emission system to make sure everything‘s good to go.
You could either spend the money on a warranty or you can bank that money and use it as your repair fund which you’re probably going to need in the near future -

Looks like a good candidate for purchasing Cummins Encore XT1 second owner warranty. It’s $4500 for 2 yrs 200k and just needs to pass their inspection. They will make sure all the updates are done to it as well. I’d just make sure it passes Cummins inspection before you buy it.
The truck will probably get around 7 mpg average depending on idle time and how well you drive it. Could go as low as 6.5 mpg
