I have a 1996 379 Pete with a cat 3406E. The engine brake is acting up, really choppy especially above 1500 rpm. Any ideas?

  3. yeah that's kind of a thing with hit those hit and miss. it's nothing real bad most of time.
take it to a cat house and tell him that the jake brakes cutting in and out..
usually what happens is it ends up being specially when you toggle it from like medium to high if I remember right I used to have a 9300 international that did that till it got fixed and basically what ended up happening was there's a wire that comes off down by the head where the Jacobs brake is located and they just have to basically rewire it..
most of the time when it cuts in and out it's just barely quick easy fix it's not like days on end..
but here's the scary part you notice how it cuts in and out depending on where you're at think about where you are if you were like some of these imported drivers that you see using the sandbox all the time more than ever because they go flying off think at all I got to do is turn on the jake brake at 6% grade or more for five miles I'll start right where it says the speed limit for trucks is 45 mile-an-hour with forty four thousand pounds...
I've said it before people have laughed about it Jake brakes and engine brakes are electric and they do fail sometimes..and if your improperly trained and don't know how to go down the hill like the old school professionals were trained pucker up and hold on tight

Trucker Kev has been there. That problem could have a couple of different causes. The wiring harness under the rocker boxes give up after long exposure to hot oil and vibration. That’s a problem common to the injector harnesses on those engines as well. The little micro-sized blade connector on the solenoids are the culprit sometimes, or the solenoids themselves. None of it is major in time and cost. Changing a connector or a solenoid is literally a few minutes. Changing the harnesses is the worst-case, and that’s only a couple of hours.
