I've always maintained the engine oil level to the top of the checkered area on the dipstick. One time when I got it serviced, they filled it all the way to the notch which is significantly above that. I asked the mechanics, but have gotten varying answers. Is the full marking at the top of the checkered area or the notch? Thanks

Checkered area... One it runs out its full

Wheeeew, thanks. I'm lucky that's what I've been doing. What is that little 'v' shaped notch cut into the metal a ways up from that?
-
Not sure but its not the full mark lol
Ralph4159 Thanks this. -
I have no idea what the notch is for either, but like mentioned, it is not the full mark. The cross-hatch is the operating range of the engine oil level. Anywhere in that range is technically "full".

they say the notch is from the mfg process. the could have done a better job explaining it
