The independent truck stops were or are going away for the same reason mom and pop retail is almost nonexistent, they can't compete against the large retailers with name and brand recognition.
Call me crazy . . . .

There's tons of money in truck stop parking. How many spots are RESERVED for paid parking.
Then add in all the expensive goodies. And as a bonus. The fuel that costs $.40 more then the local station across the street.thelushlarry and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
Does the fuel discount equal the price of the locals?
I fuel up at Maverick. $2.75
Flying J $3.15thelushlarry Thanks this. -
You obviously never heard of loves.
Free parking at all locations, best rewards system,
And adding more truck stops then all the competition
Combined.
They figured it out.
You charge to park,I'm not stopping there.
Loves gets all my money.
If i neeed something for the truck, I wait till
I hit a loves and spend my money there.
Not only are they building new ones everyday,
There expanding the old ones.
There gonna put those other pay to park
Truck stops out of business.
Then your whole theory will go up in smoke.
And you have no idea what we spend in
A truck stop.GhentSaintPeters and Brandt Thank this. -
Ok, you obviously didn’t read that I was replying to a post about current truckstops buying adjacent land and expanding their current parking.
I do like that Love’s is building a lot of new stops. I’ll stop and shower at them once in a while depending on where I am and if my fuel stop has showers or not. -
There are 9 counties that surround the San Francisco bay with a combined population of almost 8 million people, and not a single truck stop. There aren't really many places to fuel up either. Real estate is so expensive here that a lot big enough to park trucks near freeway access would cost many millions of dollars. The closest truck stops to where I live in the north bay is 1.5 hours away in Dunnigan or Sacramento.
FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -
When was the last time you went into a truck stop restaurant and seen a bunch of drivers sitting around tables shooting the breeze and eating, drinking coffee etc. ?
starmac, rank and thelushlarry Thank this. -
I believe most of the money made on the truck stop is repairs and service , shops busy day or night , whats the point spending millions of dollars to get 100-200-300 spots more , have higher taxes as well and not bringing enough revenue by doing all this . I think those companies have way smarter business planners than you ...so you definitely crazy
GhentSaintPeters and Jasonacer Thank this. -

Their is a TA and Love's in Jefferson OH right off I-71. The TA is an old 76 truck stop been there for ever. The love been their a couple years now. The TA is like 75% paid parking and that no joke. The loves was always busy like normal. Loves expanded the parking lot it pretty big now. It's all still free parking. Maybe the TA is locked in and can't expand because of location. The Loves seems to be able to do the stuff TA/Petro can't
x1Heavy and Western flyer Thank this.
