    thanks for the responses, Im not giving up, I cant afford to but as Winchester Magnum pointed out, there are so many "out of work" people going coming out of driving schools because they see us still working that the big companies can pick and choose who they put behind the wheel.

    Magnum, I remember when the industry was so desperate for drivers that as long as you were over 21 and had crossed into another state you were qualified. I guess now that is called "Regional". Interesting how they classify us now! Local Drivers, Regional Drivers, OTR Drivers.... Did I miss one in there?

    I hear ya man.

    When the dot com bubble burst and all those office workers became unemployed, many sought trucking for their next paycheck, it overpoulated, so to speak, the driver pool. due to the constant turnover back then, there was a demand for an endless supply of fresh newbs.

    IMO, it basicaly all boils down to supply and demand, just like the freight rates we are seeing today. If/when the economy ever get back on track, companies will be begging guys like you to come aboard. There's gotta be plenty of smaller outfits that would be more privy to hiring you now, than all of the megacarriers.

    I am still looking, I know there is a plethora of smaller companies out there but everyone is feeling the cargo crunch right now, I will stick it out and keep looking. The economy will turn around, its just going to take time.

    The first job I ever had was a day cab a R model Mack, 300 Mack engine and a maxidine tranny. I took a many a nap a acrosss the seat. If I tried that now, I would have to call 911 to get me out of there,:biggrin_25525:

    Hahaha, fortunately our freightshakers have enough leg room so you can get semi comfortable. I paid my dues ten years ago by cutting my teeth (so to speak) in a 1972 or 74 KW Conventional. It had a piece of 3/4" rebar sticking up out of the floor as a shifter. I also drove a triple stick, R model Mack. 5-4-5! that truck could walk through anything I put it in, I miss that old blue mack! Good times!

    I remember the number one piece of advice I got from an old timer I drove with. He said that to drive those old Kitty Wompers it took a special touch! When you get to the truck in the morning, slam your hand in the door once or twice so that you are good and mad all day! He said that following that one simple piece of advice would ensure the truck ran smooth all day and wouldnt you know it, The minute I started to baby that old beast it would begin acting up. As soon as I decided to get tough it settled right down!

    I had an old chevy diesel like that... but my baby was backwards it got jealous of chicks. me and the g/f at the time were saying good night in front of the truck and as soon i got in it it wouldent start as soon as she started "petting" the truck saying everything will be alright she started right up. To this day i never figured it out shes done that a few times only when i'm with a chick...talk about a mood killer lol
