Over the past few months, I have had the need to hook to a Swift trailer.
What is Swifts idea behind spec-ing their trailers with the dolly handle on the right/passenger side of the trailer?
I guess with all of Swifts intelligence, there is a reason for it, but for me, not being a Swift driver, this is odd & totally .......... well, never mind, I just wonder why they put the jack/dolly handle on the wrong side.

Until recently, Swift also spec'd their company trucks and lease purchase trucks with the fifth wheel release handle on the right hand side.
The reason they spec'd the trailer landing gear handle on the right side is most lazy drivers didn't put the handle back down so it's not sticking out after they dollied down, so it prevents a bent landing gear handle.
Since most backing of trailers is done on the sight side, there's a greater chance if the landing gear handle was on the left side that it would be bent if it was sticking out because it couldn't be seen as easily as if it was on the sight side.
Also if you needed to drop the trailer curbside or roadside you wouldn't be exposed or a target to passing traffic.Bakerman Thanks this. -
on the passenger side, that lessens those odds by about 75%....since about only 25% of the "Big wheelers" still drive on the side walk...Dave_in_AZ and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
Forces the driver to actually look at the passenger side of the trailer. Dont see many drivers doing pretrips anymore.

You lower the landing gear and pull the fifth wheel on the same side. -
I always assumed it was to encourage drivers to walk all the way around and posttrip before dropping.
Another reason could be the landing gear they are using. For the Holland landing gear on a dry van or reefer if you put the crank handle on the driver's side out is high range and in is low. If you put it on the passanger side, in would be high range. So ergonomically the passanger side would be better. -
I thought it was because Swift wants to do everything contrary to others.
