The key here to your becoming an owner operator is the cash flow you need to be able to continue to run for an extended period of time without any cash flow for a minimum of 2 months so allow for all possible expenses apart from your start up costs if you can get through that period then once the checks start rolling in after about 6 - 8 weeks you should be ok. So if your running local in Sydney with in say 100km you don't need a log once you start on the line haul yes you'll need a log book and you'll run on standard hours of driving unless your approved for BFM so you do 12 hours per day for six days then must have at least 24 hour break your time should then reset. So doing your own loads you'll have to keep a look out for that lest you get caught with a load you can't deliver on time. Getting back loads from Brisbane to Sydney you need to use a loading agent its up to you how you set your price based on km is OK, think about it companies are paying drivers around .50 c per km so as an owner operator you'll need to get way more than that. At least $2 per km to make some decent money.just a quick google will get you a few loading agents try them or perhaps they may refer you to others or you can also try contacting other owner operators.
