I often ran with only Google Maps when I did a fair amount of drive away for the oil industry. I rarely took recommended detours.

When we ran over sized and/or over weight loads under permit I would study the route on the permit and create a route on Google Maps using via points. Then I would text that to the group of drivers so they could study it.

Often there would be drivers in the group that would say, "I'll just follow you". I would point out that the permit states we can't run in a convoy, we have to be half a mile apart. "Oh, don't pay attention to that. We do it all the time".

Five drivers got nailed in Colorado for running in a convoy. Permits automatically revoked. They had to sit and wait for new permits and each of them paid a weeks wages in fines.

Ever run stuff out to the oil fields? Sometimes common sense doesn't work and its "call this # for coordinates to site"...call site contact..."yea so you're gonna go out through the Thunderdome 17.1mi, make a left where there's the remains of a red building, go 4.999mi to the gate, not the gate on the right, the left center gate follow that lease "road" .843mi pass the cows and its the 3rd site pad on the right.

Hey I’ve been to that site. It’s the green gate, across from the red gate.
