$40k seems real high. A platinum rebuild with the 4 year warranty at the local Cat near me was in the low $20ks 2 years ago. Have they gone up that much?

If that motor was built the same as the one I drove in a 99 Pete.

Cat is famous for undersized pistons.

If it's got the same thing on the block as the one I drove had. There's some type of block in the middle of the left side block where the blowby tube is hooked to. That's where the oil leaks out.

Cat's fix. Take the tube off. Install a oil fill cap. It's the same cap that goes in to the valve cover where you pour oil in to the engine. That will seal off and stop the oil leak. The middle valve cover comes off for a replacement cover with a vent. That's what the blowby hose gets hooked on to. Essentially, relocating the tube.

The engine isn't about to blow up. It just has broken piston rings. A new piston kit with rings and cylinders cost $2G in 05. Don't know what the cost is these days. With trumps tariffs it might be tripled by now.

That would be the cheap fix. If you can talk any shop in to it. You'll want bearings also. They have to come out anyways.

The better idea would be a complete overhaul.

Least that motor went 800k miles. As much as it sucks.

The one I drove. Only had 150k miles in 5 years. The company I was working for did the job. They had their own mechanics. I have no idea what all they did besides pistons, cylinders, and bearings. The top compression ring on all 6 pistons was broke.

That thing had so much smoke. I hooked a hose to the blowby tube and routed it out the back end of the truck. So I didn't have to breath so much of it when sitting idle.

That crap is very bad for the blood stream. We're talking EX LAX bad.
