I have been an otr driver on and off for over twenty years with about 10 years cumulative experience. I even went O/O (leased-on) for a few but did poorly due to a non-conducive home situation. I'm now living a different life with a different wife who loves the road and has a great business mind. We're considering giving it another go.
My question is this; If I own my truck and flatbed trailer out-right, have my own authority, based on a solid 10,000 mi a month scenario, What PERCENTAGE of gross, after fuel, taxes, insurance, tires, repairs,.. EVERYTHING truck related,.. can I expect to net in the current game?
Please note that I would have NO Truck or Trailer payments, NO hired drivers and NO home expenses. I've seen the 1/3-1/3-1/3 theory but it always seems to include heavy financing, or omit taxes or some other expense.
I know there are a few of you out there in this situation, or that can give me a well educated estimate. I appreciate your input,.. Thanks.
Simple net percentage for O/O.

? Depends on who you get your loads from. If you have own authority and get your loads from another carrier, they'll probably take 8% and you'd get 92%
Same with brokers, they keep a minimum of 8-10% THAT YOU KNOW ABOUT, or that they'll admit. Other times a broker will just offer a rate to you, never mentioning their keep.
TTT (To the truck) rate should be your concern tho.truckinwva Thanks this. -
On second thought, perhaps you meant net?

Net from 0% to ***. all depends on what you haul for, $1 a mile, $2 a mile, you need to know the gross income.
Let me guess, no home expenses and a paid for truck and trailer, don't tell me you are selling out to go trucking.truckinwva Thanks this. -
That's kind of a tough question in the present economic situation. I was an O/O for about 22 years. I can't say I did it every year but the net % after everything was paid and I mean EVERYTHING averaged between 35 and 37 %. I made a darn good living owning and operating my own truck. I always saved a certain amount from my settlement checks, usually 10% and made do. It's not about how much you make every week it's about how much you save and how you manage. I knew o/o that made $100K+ and could not afford to buy a tire if it blew and I knew o/o that made that much and paid cash for everything they bought. Just my 2 cents.
