Why do you tailgate 4 wheelers?

They are required by law to use those red lights, and you are required by law to stop and wait as long as necessary.

Thank you Mr. Sherlock Holmes, that wasn't the question asked. My question is why is it necessary to operate them under the circumstances I gave.

Actually in the state of New Mexico it's not.

The operative term is MAY. Not MUST, but MAY. It's up to the drivers discretion.

So in the instance I cited, the driver could (and should) choose not to operate the signals.

 

OK. I read this post and I want to contribute MY input.
Everyone always says four wheelers are idiots, and try to blame everything on them. How many of you drivers have heard the phrase motoring public? It is a professional driver's job to drive safely, legally, and protect the motoring public.
They (four wheelers) may do dumb things. Ride in the middle lane going the speed limit is not illegal in any state.
Now, if you are driving an 18-wheeler, tailgating some 4-wheeler in the middle lane, and he suddenly slams on the brakes (for a deer, traffic, whatever), and you hit him, and kill him, it is your fault, period (and you know that). It doesn't matter what speed the idiot four wheeler is going, a professional driver should never tailgate, ever. 4-wheeler drivers are not specially trained, they are unaware of the distance it takes to stop a truck, they always do stupid things. This is never going to change.
Any truck driver who tailgates to try and push a 4-wheeler out of his way, or make him get over, is not a professional driver. These stupid truckers are the idiots, because they know better, and they choose to be stupid. If these truckers haven't ever been in a preventable accident, they are just lucky.
At some point in time, every trucker has been told not to tailgate. It takes over 500 feet to stop one at 60mph. It takes a car about 190 feet to stop. Any of you truckers who think that is ok to tailgate because some idiot four wheeler is going too slow need to think about a career change. And don't even think about sharing the road with my family.
In closing, there is no excuse for tailgating in a big truck, and one day it will bite you in the ***, I promise. Just remember, if you rear-end someone, there is no explanation that will make you look good, you will probably never work a decent trucking job again.

I just said this stuff because it seems like alot of you were saying, "get over to the right and get out of the way", and stuff like that. Sticking up for the tailgating truckers out there. I have no respect for those truckers who tailgate and drive aggressively. It is unprofessional and downright dangerous. Truckers are supposed to be the professional drivers, the 4-wheelers are not. You truckers are aware of the training required to get an operators' license right? It isn't very difficult to obtain a license for a car. And I never remember any part of the course that even mentioned anything about big rigs.

 

Packrat, I think you could learn one thing from the dictionary. Look up the word patience. The reason you have to stop for a school bus is for the safety of the children, handicapped or not. If they didn't activate the warning lights and four wheelers were driving on by while the bus was loading a handicapped child, eventually there would be some sort of terrible accident. Ball joint breaks, sending the car veering into the bus, hubcap flies off, driver not paying attention, anything.
I feel it is just much safer for traffic to stop. Do you have children???
I do. And I want everyone to stop when my son's school bus is loading.
Perhaps you should leave a little earlier on your trips so you have ample time to arrive at your destination, including the delays caused by a handicapped childrens' bus.

 

passing on the right in ct was always illegal years ago,I think it still is but not enforced,I will tell you all the truth,i am tired of being tailgated by every vehicle,motorcycles cars big trucks,they are like on a suicide course,and every now and then they end up dead,its really too bad,but will they ever learn,stay to the right when safe to do so. I confess i do run the middle lane at 65 70,don't tailgate anyone and keep with the flo of the traffic. If you are finding yourself being tailgated just think first,why is this happening,is it because of my driving too slow and everyone seems to be passing me,am I blocking the speeders really bad,maybe I should move over before I get killed, its no good being right and dead.Let the fools pass you and hope maybe the cops will get them before they kill someone. THats the proper attitude to have,you will be much happier and alive by letting the fools roll on.
