To be honest, only when a broker or shipper will accept a carrier or driver produced receipt in lieu of the resident lumper service's receipt. One I haul for frequently is ok with it, a few others are usually ok as long as I clear it in advance. My policy is: we don't charge any more than the resident lumper quotes, and don't get greedy.
Disclaimer: I haul reefers, so probably a more likely thing in my world versus everyone else here. That said, this isn't a frequent thing. However, fingerprinting the load can have some time advantages on multi-stop/LTL loads, or an unusually close schedule on the following reload.
If you're leased to a carrier or a company driver, there could be some prohibition of the practice due to taxes, injury liability, and worker's comp concerns. -
