Roehl pushes the per diem plan because it simply reduces the amount they have to pay you. In other words, it increase their cash on hand, as well as cash flow, where as it increases your "net pay" slightly, it is not worth it because you will have much lower taxable income which which reduce your tax return very significantly. It will also greatly reduce the amount of unemployment benefits you are eligible for. If you were to do anything with any business that looked at your income, such as a bank, if you are on the perdiem plan, your income will look substantially lower and you will qualify to borrow less. The perdiem plan is not a good idea for most states, and really only truly benefits the carrier. Be wary of any company that pumps the per diem plan. And there are many that do. Crete has no perdiem plan. A great idea. Do research on here about the perdiem plan.

There's only one person I can find with anything good to say about Crete, and that person is on the Roehl forum. End of story.

Nate, just curious, who do you currently drive for? Perhaps you're hoping for a sign on bonus of your own :biggrin_25525: lol
Opinions are like, well you know the rest of that saying I'm sure. Amount of time on the road doesn't really matter as far as sizing up companies unless you've company hopped enough to formulate a personal opinion on each and every one. My husband has been driving for 10 years, so technically I guess I should ask his opinion and post it here for you and it should be taken as Gods word over yours because he's been out there longer? That's the theory you provide as to your opinion over October Guys. Maybe he has a different DSR than you did, making his experience there one that he enjoys. He's been there a month longer than my husband so I won't post our observations on the company since they won't count, being so green to the company and all...except for the illegal running part, that's why my husband got a visit into the office after being there a couple of weeks and lectured on his "creative logging" and warned if it happens again he was out of there. He hasn't altered his log since he was made aware that yes, they do check. Wow, illegal!
Honestly, weigh the ins and outs of the companies, visit different trucking forums, take each post with a grain of salt. If you sign with one company over the other and feel like in a few months you've made a mistake, then learn from that experience, like so many other truckers out there have when selecting what they thought was the right fit company for them that turned out to not fully be. If the closer terminal is the selling point then go for Crete, if starting sooner than later is what you want give Roehl a call. It all boils down to you what you and your wife feel is the best fit, not what anyone pushes on the internet.
Best of luck to you in whichever company you decide to hang your hat with :biggrin_255:

I guess your husband was logging in such a way that, were his logs scrutinized, it could easily be seen. Roehl does not care if you run illegal as long as you can conceal it well enough, in other words, as long as they dont look bad. But they will play the whole "we have to talk to you about your logs". This is called putting up a front and CYA. It depends who your dispatcher is. As far as which company is better, that can go on to no end. Im simply saying that if the dice be rolled, they are better off, in my opinion, being rolled with Crete. Much better off.

This part is definitely something that can be agreed upon irregardless of which company is discussed.

As far as his logs, I'm not sure what exactly it was, he said something about he was lectured for what time of day he said he started on them. Quite honestly as far as logs go they're Greek to me, so whatever the issue was exactly I couldn't say for definite and I won't pretend to fully know lol. The lecture came when he was switching divisions. His old DSR called him in when he was in Marshfield and he had to sit down with him and someone else to inform him his logging was wrong etc., then he was moved to the other division. Guess his old DSR wanted a final say lol. Mind you before that no one said anything about it, just when he switched it was brought up. No big deal really, he knew what he was doing was wrong. He got use to having to be creative in the past, it stuck, just had to retrain himself to run by actual time instead of ideal time. I will say overall he's ok with them, his complaints are more creature comforts he was use to that he has to do without and more his own issues than theirs.

Here's a thought, what if he signs on with Crete and is disappointed, will you be there to catch him when he falls? That's one thing I don't like is seeing someone push someone else so strongly to a company and then if it doesn't work out, well not your problem then, is it? My husband will tell people what he thinks of his company but he won't recruit anyone. He knows from trial and error that what works out well for one person may totally stink for another.

Their site use to show the non tax advantage pay tables, but since they last updated it I don't see them anymore, just the tax advantage ones. I guess they don't give the option anymore, not sure though. Call and ask them to make for definite.

I didn't opt for the per diem option, I receive a "standard" paycheck; it is still available to new hires as of this week. The per diem option wasn't beneficial to me and it's generally not beneficial to most people. You should check with someone who is familiar with tax treatments in the state you live in. I believe that in some states it can actually be beneficial. However during my corporate career I had no exposure to tax policy or law and can't speak to it. A CPA in your area is the best source for unbiased information regarding this issue.

I know you're struggling with this decision. It isn't easy but once you make a choice the pressure's off. Make a decision one way or the other and make the best of it. Which ever company you choose I hope you enjoy your new career and most of all I hope you have a safe and happy career.

    Best Regards,

    O. G.

I'm not on the per diem. Yes there is a choice and yes they try to get you on the plan. If the pay was the same I would consider it, but they reduce the amount they pay per mile in total. If the total amount was the same I would consider it, but if you figure it out it is a wonderful excuse to pay you less.

Years ago the pitcher Nolan Ryan wrote a biography. While many ball players lost a lot of money and got in a lot of trouble for participating in tax shelters that turned out to be illegal, he was quietly making even more money through sound investments. His logic has stuck with me, it needs to make sense. Telling me that I will make more money if I let you pay me less makes no sense. Now you know why I don't participate in the per diem plan.

If the per diem rate is .285 cpm, what is the non per diem rate? I'm having trouble getting a straight answer on that. Of course now they are closed for the holiday. Thanks all for the info. No matter who I go with (right now I don't think either choice would be a bad fit), I'm keeping a positive attitude about it. I don't like job hopping and plan on staying with my choice for at least 3 to 4 years. My lenth of employment is a positive that companies like. I realize not every week is gonna be sun shiney and nice, but no job is like that and I tend to bear thru the bad. My wife and I are gonna take the weekend off from all this and decide after the weekend. Thanks again all and I plan on keeping in touch.
