As a driver and trainer for stevens, I can tell you this. If you drive on the company (not lease) side of company, you must either make the opti-stops given or have them changed if their out of route. You and you're driver manager can work on that. The reason for this is the price of fuel. Stevens is a business, not a government bailout program. It has to make a profit to be here.

It's true that you don't have to take the exact route. Just make the fuel stops. The variance is higher at first and a good variance number is 7% or less.

As far as bring routed to the yard for retraining, that's proof that stevens is going to work with you to make you a good drive. Many other companies will reroute you to the yard to fire you, not to try to fix the problem.

If you owned a truck and it cost you money rather than made you a profit, how many miles would you run that driver. Eventually you would run out of money.

I have been with Stevens Since the begininng of 2009. My experince has not been the best. The 3week training is there to show you control of the truck and get your CDL. That's the basic for the school, and yes teach you to drive. If you have issues they will hold you back into another class to grad later but keep in mind they will do that only a time or to then they say your not cut for trucking if they have to continue with hold backs. They say they pay 350.00 a week while out training ok good but keep in mind there is still deductions so your looking at 299. some week of pay. There is also the 75.00 week for food allowance that of course is to be paid back as well along with bus tickets and hotel stay, but you inly get meal pay while training in the yard. Once you go out with a trainer you have to bring your on money to eat or what ever or starve. The first 5 weeks is really the make or break period whether you will continue with trucking. You are required to sleep in the truck with your trainer top bunk of course. Driving your first week you will only be able to go 750 a day and each week it goes up along with driving coast to coast up and down mountians with and without a jake. At the end of this go in the yard for anothr week of class and go out for another three weeks with a finishing trainer now. They don't do the dumb and dumber any more. At this point your still making the 299. Once done here you will go into what they call grad fleet which is three stages G1 G2 G3 this part sucks. this is where you begin your .26c a mile. which they say in however many months you will get a raise and by the end of the year you will be making .30 or .32c a mile. The trucks are set # 62 mph while in grad fleet and no cruise but hey you get a jake. At the end of the three stage grad there suppose to give you cruise and reset the to 66 mph. Stevens is fully concerend on mpg with there fuel. Well I run my truck 62 and hardly shut down but to fuel or when im not in it and i still have a 7.3 or better mpg so you guys running 55 and killing and restarting every time you walk to the back of your trailer and back your not saving that much. Fuel department stresses this way to much. Sorry im going to be cool in summer and warm in winter.

Miles well had a prob with first to dm's now got a new one and going pretty good right know.

Any way my experince has been rough and hard. If I had it to do all over agian I would have reconsidered for something better. Just like I was told by an insider that works there. You talk to recruiting its all a sales pitch to get you in and suckered. They say when you go solo you'll make 850. aweek yea maybe in 2 years it all sales pitch.

You may agree or disagree but I'm locked in for abit longer with there contracts.

What I will agree to is all the extra training to keep you safe and aware to be agood driver.

Don't get crazy, first of all it is against dot regs to sleep on the top bunk while the truck is moving. And while the truck is sitting I like the top bunk better.

yea that 299 after taxes is gonna be VERY stressful if you have a family to feed. Cuz first three weeks of school is no pay, then you get the 5 weeks of 299, then 1 week of orientation and 3 weeks of 299, then you do the 2nd orientation i think, then you go out and make money on your own. It's gonna be at least 2 to 3 months later before you get more than 299 a week if you're lucky. But that's the case for all these training companies out there, you can hardly survive if you are the only one in your family making the dough and have to feed them and yourself. Better save up some money first before you start into trucking business if you have no experience at all. Or be suffering ramen noodles for few months, that works too.

Well first of all I went to a private trucking school in Winona, MN. A cheaper, much better choice with longer, better quality training than most company schools. So I wasn't married to any company for a year.

My first job was with a dry van company Monson trucking out of Duluth, MN. I cleared $44,000 my first year and was HOME EVERY WEEK. It was not the most pleasant company to work for, but a great place to start.

I have said it before and will say it again and again and again. I have ZERO sympathy or pity for anyone who marries a company like Swift or Stevens without doing any research. Trucking is not just a job change, it's a lifestyle change. These outfits wouldn't be profitable if there weren't enough gullible suckers to work for them. On top of screwing yourselves over you are also a detriment to the trucking industry as a whole by allowing these big outfits to snuff and underbid the rest of the decent companies out there.

I currently pull reefer for a small outfit out of central MN. Some people think I'm nuts, but how many people can say they cleared over 13,000 miles and over $5700 pre tax last month?

and I hear this all the time:

"But I could never put up with grocery warehouses, and the extra headache, and that reefer howling behind me when I'm sleeping!"

That reefer can howl all day and all night as long as I'm under a load that's making me decent money. I put up with some BS and hard days too, but it sure beats pulling dry van or flatbad and sitting halfway across the country for half a week waiting for the Quallcom spybox to beep. And on top of it getting a 400 mile loser load that can't deliver for 3 days.

In my opinion, if the economy really tanks, reefers, bullwagons and intermodal will be the only thing moving out here. The U.S. is still the fattest nation in the world, and it doesn't seem like the economy has convinced anyone to stop eating.

Definately crappy money. But if you can hold the finances together for that period of time, it will pay off in the end.

you know you have to start out somewhere , and beleive me there is alot worse than stevens transport !!!! i cant beleive how many people wine and think they just cause they got there cdls companies should givem 100.000.00 a year and a brandnew truck ect... if you think stevens is bad go to another co like crime inc.. or swift or some other co that might take you with no experiance and see how you get treated.
i worked there for a year and went to crime inc and boy what a mitake.keep a positive attitude and be safe and respectfull,be on time pay your dues and the miles and pay will come.remember you have to start somewhere and i assure you it wont be on top.there is alot worse companies you could be at....
    good luck

Yea I agree. Stevens aint a bad company to work for I got nothing against them. I just had bad luck cuz the dm kept quitting after a month or two so I was never settled with one dm. I know they got freight. Just need to find the right dm that will work instead of sitting on their ### and lie to you. That was what drew the line for me.
