Driving by a train with a bunch of trailers on it is kind of the same. Still hasn't put drivers out of work and there is a Engineer on that train. Why aren't the trains autonomous.

It's funny you should say that. I delivered my last load on April 1st. Kind of symbolic. I had the EGR blues, a sign this check and don't worry about the amount blues. I quit. Sold everything for a loss 2 months later and I am going back to electronics. Too much regulation, not enough money to make it worthwhile and no life.
I miss the rig but not much.

For a small percentage of us, trucking can still be...okay, this is going to sound stupid, but do you remember the movie The Conjuring?

I was mostly struck by how the couple can rely on the husband's truck driver salary to provide for a family of five AND purchase lake-front property. That was the thing that sent the most shivers down my spine. What the hell happened to this industry?

    Pretty spooky.

Yes I do and I also noted that. I did a year in trucking in the mid 90s. The money was awful then, just abysmal. I could see that it was going to take years to start earning anything that would compensate for the inconvenience of the job.
I hung onto my CDL though as an insurance policy. I was glad I did.
In 2007 my world dissolved so in 2008 on April 2nd I restarted my trucking career. It was ok once I got on with a decent company. Then it improved with the purchase of a truck and then finally my own authority.
The ONLY thing that made it viable was living in the truck. So I stripped away all the bills, particularly relevant as a company driver, and saved my money. It was how it was possible to buy my truck(s) for cash.
Then I waited for the EGR vulture. He was always circling just biding his time. I think that is what gets a lot of us. I certainly don't think I am unique.
Meanwhile it got harder and harder to keep it all rolling along, the regulations became more and more restrictive, the shippers and brokers more and more stingy. I got older and worked out a plan to bow out gracefully but it got short circuited. The whole thing speeded up.
In the end the money wasn't enough to pay costs and give a decent profit. It meant beating your brains out to get ahead and I couldn't see the point.
Even as an OO with your own authority and all the equipment paid for it was a waste of time. The prices offered and stuck to by brokers was a joke. They would not shift.
    That was it - done.
Trump lied. The regulations in trucking got worse and more laughable. So much for removing regs to let business breath. I see now they are going to roll back the ridiculous regs that were brought in unnecessarily in 2013!! What a ridiculous circus.
I did my 12 years, that is it. I came out of it a little bit better than when I went in the 2nd time. Not by much though.
In that movie The Conjuring that guy was struggling but he was doing alright. That is not the case nowadays for anybody. The trouble involved with keeping a big rig in good shape, doing preemptive stuff, juggling fuel costs AND satisfying ALL the regulations is more trouble than it is worth.
I am planning on spending the remainder of my life visiting some of those things I drove by. I am not rich but you just can't buy time.
Let's face it the big companies won. They have rigged the game in such a way that a one man operation, a true American entrepreneur, a believer in the American dream, is so edged out that it is virtually impossible. Unless you have some kind of niche or special connections forget about it.
Back to electronics for me. 12 years - phut!
